Pros
Pride in what the company manufactures, the blue collar jobs it provdes and the honor and loyalty the employees have.
Cons
An execssive amount of senior management at corporate. There are so many Directors in just IT alone we can't get anything done at the Plants.
Advice to Senior Management
You talk about reducing costs so we can keep locations open so why not get rid of some of the mass amounts of executive management?
Pros
Great people, great opportunities, very forward-looking in technologies.
Cons
They closed the doors, so no growth opportunities there!
Advice to Senior Management
Don't close the doors...
Pros
The only saving grace for this company are the hard working employees that keep it running despite the relentless focus on the bottom line.
Cons
Unfair salaries, Micro-managers at every turn, no vision for the future, lack of investment in current technologies, weak management that is more concerned with who you know instead of what you know.
Advice to Senior Management
Place the highest value on your employees. Give them the best tools available to accomplish your goals and quit allowing your HR people to low ball salaries, it drives away the best people.
Pros
Pay well, give bonuses in good times, help if you need off and profit sharing and other benifits. Safety environment.
Cons
H.R deptment and managers don't help you if you have an issue with a manager not treating like a human being. Not expressing that you have done a good job, once in a while.
Advice to Senior Management
Need to follow there mission statement to have respect for there employee's.
Pros
New President appears to have much better leadership skills and manages as more of a professional than the rest of his staff (inherited). He recently made a change at CFO position that was badly needed.
Cons
Leadership skills of executive and senior level managers is almost non-existent. Most are only concerned about their "turf" or they think the way to advance is to try to appease everyone. This company lacks central direction and a course forward. They also refuse to centralize functions which would eliminate headaches (IT) and create major cost savings and standardization. CMC does not appear to understand corporate risk at all for a Fortune 500 company. Instead they are stuck in the past and still operate like a much smaller company. Unfortunately, it will probably take a merger/buy out to change any of this.
Advice to Senior Management
Send all executive and senior level managers to leadership training. They don't seem to understand the vast difference between being just a manager and being a leader.
Pros
Job security, work hard and they will keep you around. Many good people who care about what they do and have pride in their work.
Cons
No room for advancement here, unless you know the right people. I've seen too many qualified people passed over only to see someone grossly under-qualified in the position. Healthcare csots that are pushed back to the employee are getting out of control, if you don't have kids, save the money and risk not aving insurance or get it elsewhere.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your people and heed what they say! Remember that job satisfaction is key to keeping employees and not having to constantly keep replacing those who move on to greener pastures.
Pros
I was fortunate enough to work at the Seguin plant. It had a great culture left over from the Selig's and the management there was fantastic. However, at other locations this is not true within the company.
Cons
Not afraid to lay people off-especially the older and experienced to keep the young and inexperienced. For the record, I was the young and inexperienced.
Advice to Senior Management
Go back to being a steel company, not a computer software company that sucks money out of the company's pockets.
Pros
CMC is a growth organization. The company is always looking for good talent. The benefits package is wonderful. Definitely developed to recruit and retain employees.
Cons
This is a steel manufacturer and they are a very conservative organization. This economic climate makes it a very challenging environment to work as the company continues to grow and adjust to the ever changing business climate.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the lines of communcation open. Employees like to feel like they are a part of the solution. The organizational culture is important.
Pros
New Executive recently hired to get control of the madness.
Cons
Too many managers are in positions because of longevity with company or "good old boy" network instead of being qualified for the position. Executives appear to have no leadership skills at all. They still operate and communicate like a very small company. Currently, a lot of in-fighting among staff in Dallas headquarters as each member is more concerned about control and "turf" than how to run a company. Again - lack of leadership abilities.
Advice to Senior Management
Get some leadership training for members of management at all levels - particularly the executive level. Get rid of the dead weight managers that have outlived their usefulness or are simply incompetent. Get a new HR Director - the current guy is extremely arrogant. In a recent staff meeting, he told his staff "I could go pick up anyone on the street and they would do a better job than most of you." Even if true, you don't make a statement like that to the entire group in a meeting. Very unprofessional person.
Pros
The company was built on ingenuity and grew to be quite admired. There are several divisions that could give an individual opportunity to grow professionally.
Cons
The leadership is lacking. Technology is a somewhat backward. Although on the surface all seems to be great there are very negative undercurrents that create a difficult atmosphere to thrive in.
Advice to Senior Management
There have been many changes in personnel and benefits, hopefully steps are being taken to mend morale and build the company back to the successful and highly regarded entity it was in the early 2000's.
