I have been working at Commerzbank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good work-life balance
    Some great colleagues
German bedrock gives strength to business

    Cons

Difficult to progress career above a certain point without native German language
Senior management (especially in Germany) tend to stay at the bank long term, which combined with German employment law makes it very difficult to introduce / promote fresh thinkers into the upper circles
When markets get difficult bank has a habit of retrenching back to Germany making it difficult to maintain healthy client relationships internationally
Poor communication on most matters from senior management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need better, timely and considered communication on direction of bank
Need better collaboration between business units at a senior level to coordinate initiatives

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Commerzbank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - excellent professional development policy and generous training budgets
    - fairly relaxed atmosphere and pace for an investment bank
    - the company's policies acknowledge importance of work-life balance

    Cons

    - no actual incentives to be proactive at your workplace
    - be prepared to one very slow to non-existent career progression
    - pay is lower than industry averages
    - you don't have a say in work-life balance policy implementation, an employee is a commodity, management cares about their own agenda exclusively (obviously)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR and career management policies don't serve employees, because the procedures are too stiff and people implementing them seem to be more concerned about possible repercussions than about giving a valuable advice and support.

    Pros

If you just want to glide through working life this bunch is the equivalent of working in an international organisation.

    Cons

Destroys motivation. An MD grade manager is equivalent if ability to about a 18 month AVP from Barclays Capital.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Change the management

I worked at Commerzbank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Amenable co workers, good location, airconditioned , security ok.

    Cons

In a nutshell it feels a very sad place, long gone is the former prestige.
Endless re organising, questionable management, feels a bit of a job-worthy culture, many contractors often negating permanent staff input, obscure appraisal process, poorly trained line managers, distant uncommunicative HR, pointless or badly explaned processes, no real help for personal development or proactive care for staff well being, canteen going a bit downhill, facilities poorly maintained and sometimes out of order, mouldy showers, building getting generally tatty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to school, learn how to listen to staff as a person and not a resource.

Frustrating, due to constraints on management and reactive thinking versus regulatory environment

I worked at Commerzbank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some good colleagues helped to soften the continual disappointment employees face. In the UK office, there were OK facilities for employees to use and a reasonable HR function.

    Cons

Ultimately doomed by the inability to restructure in Germany, due to an excessively strong worker's council, employees in other regions are sacrificed instead to meet the need for cuts. I would not advise anyone to consider working here unless you are sure you have a guarantee in writing of duration of contract.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lobby harder with the politicians in Berlin to allow the firm to restructure properly domestically. Split off the investment bank, or better still close it, as it will never be profitable given the cost of capital hurdle imposed on it by the corporate centre.

I worked at Commerzbank as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Easy access, friendlier colleague and great HR support. Wonderful canteen, secure access to building. Provides quiet room for all faith and celebrate their ethnic origins.

    Cons

However, sometime 3rd party consultants brought in overrides experienced and well informed employees. This is demotivating behaviour as consultant's reviews are favoured by management as oppose to listening in house expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hear out your employees, they have great passion and commitments.
