    Diverse Company

I have been working at Commonwealth Care Alliance

    Pros

One of the best companies I have worked for. Top management understands the challenges of being in Boston and have instituted a telecommuting policy.

    Cons

As with any growing company they are having growing pains and a result the chaos.

I have been working at Commonwealth Care Alliance full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Exposure to cutting edge policy development
Highly mission-oriented and driven to foster workplace values across the company
    Extensive personnel training
    Legitimate work-life balance
    Great benefits + vacation time

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive; negotiation will get you no where
    Constant reorganization
Many departments lack an understanding of how they fit into the overall organization. There's a lack of operational knowledge throughout many integral areas such as project management, IT, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going to focus on workplace values, you should also focus on building an understanding of what the organization is trying to accomplish. Infrastructure oriented departments (HR, IT, PMO) lack a basic understanding of company operations making it very difficult to carry out projects.

    Pros

Good benefits, nice co-workers makes for a pleasant work environment.

    Cons

Supervisors don't allow you enough time to solve complex issues. It's all about the numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Test your new systems before launching it on care managers and the public.

I have been working at Commonwealth Care Alliance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, subsidize partial public transportation costs.

    Cons

Everything. Too political, incompetent mid level and senior managers who are politically connected to the founders. Cannot make decisions in a timely manner. It is a keep your head down environment and filled with backstabbers. Company is infused with taxpayer money in the form of Medicare which is going broke and Medicaid which the State is broke and in debt. Without a care that this money is taxpayer funded, the services and company will be unsustainable as there is only a finite amount of resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, they don't listen. Company is looking at the bottom line for taxpayer funded resources

    Pros

The mission of taking care of the sickest poorest people! The leadership of the brilliant CEO

    Cons

Completely understaffed in most areas, overwhelmed by rapid membership growth, finance area is full of the blind leading the blind
While the CEO is a visionary, growth means it is time for professional managers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire experienced execs, get rid of deadwood and crazy people

CCA took on more than it could handle and burned many loyal staff out. Lacking bench-strength at senior management level

I worked at Commonwealth Care Alliance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome mission. Good paid time off, health insurance, flexible work schedules in some areas. There were some really dedicated, smart, loyal staff.

    Cons

Lots of silos. Multiple teams working on the same project, not knowing about each other. Decisions related to systems conversions made by high level staff without input from SME's. Severe lack of communication from above and cross-functionally. Finger pointing rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time for serious changes at the executive team level. CCA needs savvy managers, not the old crowd. Listen and act. Change culture of keep your mouth shut and head down or "duck and cover." Accept new ideas and stop saying "we've always done it this way."

I have been working at Commonwealth Care Alliance full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Co-workers and leadership are pleasant face-to-face. All seems friendly and presented as a cohesive environment, on the way in. Expectations of annual bonus structure and work from home.

    Cons

Reality hits less than one year after, when promises are denied \ unfulfilled. Then you are stuck, so that your resume is not compromised by a short stay. Culture is extremely passive-aggressive. Smiles are followed by cutting email CC'd to a larger group... is the norm here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge that you were a small organization before ObamaCare flooded you with tax payer dollars. Hire people that have far more experience than you have in order to actually succeed in this endeavor...business articles will justify that decision if you decide to educate yourselves.

Constant reorganization. Ineffective executive staff removed from clinical care, yet making decisions about clinical care. Lack of opportunity for growth. Unfair hiring practices-opportunities often not posted. Lack of respect for front line workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
