    Pros

Collegial atmosphere; purpose-driven employment; typically manageable hours (with busy seasons like most other jobs); plenty of training opportunities; flexibility to work on topics that are tangentially related to primary job function.

    Cons

Unpredictable/cyclical management can shift wildly; little room for growth within given policy areas; tension between policy & politics; compensation is not necessarily tied to job performance.

I have been working at Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Not one staffer slacked in providing me with all the answers I needed to gain any lacking knowledge. The Chairman wasn't around a lot simply because he was extremely busy being one of the most important person in the state, so that was understandable. Staffers took time out of their busy work schedules to teach their ways one on one.

    Cons

No air conditioning in the Summer! A little weird for a con but I would have to say that was the only one.

I worked at Commonwealth of Massachusetts full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working on the beach was a pleasure, and the lifeguards have their own shack which is attached to a branch of the Charles River Canoe and Kayak rental company. An Environmental Protection Officer helped with any problems that arose with intoxicated or otherwise out of line patrons who the lifeguards or park workers could not handle without disregarding their primary responsibilities. The workers are all great, and radios are provided for quick and easy communication when necessary.

    Cons

The fourth of July is absolutely insane, people sneak into the park and you can barely see the sand underneath all the patrons. Cleaning up the park with pic sticks is also a part of the job, as well as occasionally cleaning the bathrooms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Extend beach hours longer into the season and have a seasonal cookout for all the employees.
