    Always Busy

    Analyst (Current Employee)
    Franklin, TN

ProsThere are always interesting things going on at CHS. Always something new if you look around. They like to be lean but the managers I know are easy to work with overall.

ConsSometimes it does seem like the badge color is a bit of a dividing point? People don't always see contractors and FTE's as both trying for the same goal- a good outcome of a project or team.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow contractors to access training programs, even if at a cost to the contractor.

    Corporate greed on steroids

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsOkay insurance plan. Good physician staff.

ConsNo regard for employees. I know of one employee of 30 years summarily fired as a cost cutting measure...by Email. CHS customarily pays wages in the lower 1/3 of market rates. Nurses are routinely denied time off for doctor's visits and the like even with several weeks notice. Profits are far more important than patients. Employee turnover is high. The only comraderie among employees stems from the feeling that misery loves company.

Advice to Senior ManagementOur hospital is among the largest in CHS yet, to the best of my knowledge, none of the Nashville executives have ever set foot on campus. Try to manage the hospitals you have rather than focusing on sucking up even more.

Reckless disregard for the human element

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsOpportunity to learn new skillset
Ability to move up rapidly if you are good at the political game

ConsYou will be expected to work up to 90 hours per week to complete projects
    Incompetency at senior levels
Disregard for employees health, well being and family concerns
Tendency towards arrogance and dominance from superiors...micro-management from multiple sources leads to confusion and errors
Deadlines are inflexible and blame is passed down the food chain
Communication from corporate to remote sites is often too late for the situation
Contractors are treated like disposable, subhuman vermin
Overtime pay for contract work is straight...not time and a half as per industry standard.

Advice to Senior ManagementEvaluate your organization objectively from the outside. Listen to the complaints of current and former employees and contractors: there is a consistency to their arguments and they all point to unreasonable expectations, poor communications, an "old-boy" network and growing pains reflected in inadequate resources and delayed response. You cannot retain talent by working them to the very brink of their sanity. You cannot retain talent by denying them family time. You cannot retain talent by discouraging lunch breaks. You will only retain the desperate, the meek and the dictatorial types and will continue to spend an inordinate amount of your budget on hiring and training instead of the infrastructure..which is sorely lacking. This organization needs restructuring from the top down and reviews will continue to be poor until significant change is implemented

Most noteworthy work experience in my career.

    Director (Former Employee)
    Franklin, TN

ProsI learned more about navigating politics and building relationships than I ever expected to need to know. There are a lot of strong, articulate, intelligent and visionary people at this organization, they are just not permitted to use their strengths.

ConsVery large and complex company trying to do business the same way they did when they had 1/4 the hospitals. Poor processes. Poor execution. Company does not invest in employees. Company doesn't value staff. A lot of time and money is wasted because decisions aren't made until the last minute and then systems are deployed with bandaids and the expectation that someone will go back and fix it or complete it later but there never is a later because everyone is moving on the next project. For a complex organization, they continue to partner with small and unsophisticated vendors that lack the ability to deploy a product out of the box. Lots of 'yes' men. Lots of pontificating. Good people that are not rewarded. Under performers continue to survive by flying under the radar and continue to advance because they find someone else to throw under the bus. Silos are solid and difficult to navigate. Lack of vision. Expectations and workload is not only unreasonable but demonstrates how out of touch leadership is. Good people are overworked and working at a level below their paid grade. Under performers coast. Narcissistic behavior is rampant. Turnover is very high - up to 30% in some areas. Lack of transparency regarding next steps or decision making is disturbing. If business model changed and was more progressive, they could be more effective with less staff but no one with decision making power is interested in a change of that magnitude. Goals that impact bonuses are discussed in April, distributed in June and expected to be met by December. Huge disparity with annual increases between teams/SVPs.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeave. Clean house. Re-evaluate who you want to be in 1 - 2 - 5 - 10 years and then create a published strategic outline of how we need to get there. Stop rewarding under performers, passive aggressive behavior and chaos creators with continued employment. Change how you do business. This is a company that has the potential and footprint to be the best healthcare employer in the world. In order to do that, you have to invest in your team. Provide clear direction to your team and then get out of the way and let them do what you hired them to do. Do away with some of the high level perks (planes, etc.) and low level perks (2-5-10 year pins that everyone throws away), and eliminate the Christmas parties and replace with industry training opportunities and leadership development. There is no internal leadership development. Stop focusing on where the art work goes and who sits where and focus on what you need to do to make this company a company people don't want to leave because they feel valued and a part of something bigger than themselves. Get rid of the guy that humiliates his team and treats them like they are idiots. Take time to look at how your competitors are doing business and being successful and model some of those behaviors. Then think back to when those ideas were pitched to you and you refused to go down that path. Lead the way. You had the idea first...you just didn't listen.

Great Company to get extensive experience with...

Associate Systems Administrator Storage (Current Employee)
    Brentwood, NY

ProsConsiderable variety of hardware and software in all areas, extensive number of teams, large number of facilities around the US, and odd enough are huge turnover in Full Time Employees

ConsCHS only wants 2 years from their full time employees but this is convenient since two years is all that most people stay. Incredible amount of politics at all levels of employment. No internal promotion available at any time

Advice to Senior ManagementTo be more interested in the advancement of their employees to save the knowledge that they have of you company design.
