Current Employee – been working at Community Health Systems part-time for more than a year
Pros – Extra work is always available, usually with incentive pay, because they can't keep nurses on staff. High turnover.
Cons – Low hourly wages, expensive benefits, poor communication from management, disorganized, bottom dollar is most important. Risk well being of patients in order to keep staffing at minimum.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to your nurses. They are the backbone of the hospital.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at Community Health Systems full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – 2% cost of living increase
Cons – favoritism. Admin could care less about addressing huge problem of turnover. CNO says "It's for the best" No consistency. A new grad can go right in ICU but a seasoned RN of 15 yrs must apply and take critical care class. Nurses go home in tears. Turnover in Med/Surg over 50%. All new grads. This hospital has not retained the seasoned staff. Doctors leaving. Admin leaving. Nurses leaving. Money is what is most valued. Losing several as they are not competetive. Top 100 but at what expense. This place is nuts! MUCH RETALIATION!!
Advice to Senior Management – Replace top 3. They do not act at all on issues effecting staff for many years. Lip service running rampant. Turnover is everyone but 5 on Med/Surg over last few years. ER just as bad and ICU. Can't keep a director in ER. two left in just a few months.

Former Employee – worked at Community Health Systems full-time for more than a year
Pros – -Some great physicians and nurses
-Good experience working with severe mental illness
-Some coworkers were excellent to work with
-Fast-paced job
-Significant improvements to Emergency Department during the time I worked there
Cons – -Unrealistic expectations
-Poor communication within and between departments
-Conflict between various departments of the hospital
-Staff in physical danger due to poorly staffed security and policies regarding aggressive and agitated patients
-High stress environment
-Over-focus on number of admissions rather than appropriate patient care
-Stringent rules on punctuality
-Staff can be reprimanded/punished for using sick days
-High turnover in behavioral health departments
-RN staff valued higher than master's-level clinicians
Advice to Senior Management – -Work to retain hard-working employees instead of catering to staff who are unproductive but have been employed by the hospital for a long period of time.
-Improve safety for staff.

Former Employee – worked at Community Health Systems full-time
Pros – Fantastic coworkers, very knowledgable & willing to help.
Cons – Completely unreasonable expectations from upper management. Focus is always on what was NOT done, with no acknowledgement of any accomplishments, do not expect any pats on the back for a job well done. Consistent 12-15 hr workdays are the norm. Upper management does not seem to fully comprehend the demands/ expectations that are so nonchalantly handed out as no additional compensation is available, and all work is still to be maintained within the mythical "40 hr work week".
Advice to Senior Management – Your employees do still have lives outside of their jobs. As much hard, exhausting, never ending work that is put in during the week, show more appreciation, be more understanding, and recognize your employees for what they are worth.

Former Employee – worked at Community Health Systems full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Salaries seem to be up to the expected standards amoungst the "for profit" hospital industry. Administration personnel of CHS hospitals are grossly overpaid in comparison to the not for profit healthcare community.
Cons – Horribly micromanaged from the top of the corporate food chain down to the individual hospital administrations. "Bottom Line" trumps everything including customer service, staff morale and capital preservation. Upper management is allowed to be arbitrary in their dealings with supervisory staff. If you are starving, you might take a job with CHS, but make it a last resort.
Advice to Senior Management – Get rid of the "good ol' boys" syndrome. The incestuous for profit hospital systems in Nashville do nothing but breed incompetence and arrogance by recycling the same people between companies over and over. Get some new blood into the industry.

Former Employee – worked at Community Health Systems full-time for more than a year
Pros – I honestly cannot think of one....
Cons – poor pay no staffing. more directors than staff no education poor benefits. employees made to take their vacation time because corporate isn't making enough money. no supplies. poor care. management is absurd nursing is grossly underpaid staffing is frightening...and I could go on and on.
Advice to Senior Management – get rid of your middle management. get rid of all your directors. teach your staff how to do their job. pay people what they are worth. stop saying "it's a for profit hospital". take care of your patients. pay for employees certifications. stop hiring directors who have no idea what they are doing just because they are blond and pretty. You are an absolute disaster. I still cringe when I think about working there.
