    Pros

Engaging work environment, HR is truly invested in creating a sense of culture and maintaining the identity of the company.

    Cons

Lack of training, leadership, and investment in their employees lead to a rapid turnover rate.

  3. Fun Internship that will help you build your portfolio and give you a byline.

    Pros

This was a probably the most "fun" internship I have ever had– creative editors, flexible schedule, and a fair bit of freedom within each assignment. Some editors are stricter than others. I worked in one of the smaller "channels" (departments), but it seemed like most of the editors were in their mid 20's-30's and very passionate about hip hop, pop culture, music, sneakers, art etc.

My editors were open to letting interns pitch ideas in addition to writing blurbs and introductions. There was the occasional request to transcribe an interview and even rarer coffee run, but for the most part, I felt like a productive member of the team.

    Cons

This may not resonate with everyone, but I personally would not feel fulfilled if I spent my 9-5 looking at memes and gifs, but perhaps that's why they have interns.

    Pros

Fantastic online exposure, friendly staff, work from home and at your pace

    Cons

Ambiguous pay scale, only contact with anyone is through email so response time can take a while, no formal training

    Advice to Management

Establish a transparent and simple pay scale so that freelancers know how much they are getting paid per article. Institute some sort of training on the system rather than leaving newbies to fend for themselves through long email threads and a very generic PDF instruction booklet.

    Pros

If you work hard, and stay loyal to the company, Complex does reward you.
They try very hard to retain good people. There is a friendly team atmosphere, and it's likely you'll make many good friends there.

    Cons

Challenging work environment - it's hard to disconnect from work.
Keeping a good work/life balance was the main challenge.

    Advice to Management

Encourage employees to disconnect from email during vacations, unless absolutely needed.
Come up with ways to improve relationships between departments.

    Pros

One of the best publishers and in-house marketing teams in the city. Work with great talent in-house, they do have some smart leaders and you will work with the biggest brands in world.

    Cons

Career and personal growth are limited. They do not push to help you get a balanced life, and with what the request annual perks are not sufficient to a positive balance with work hustle and life. Negative environment at times and questionable behavior by leadership. They oversteps boundaries from time to time.

    Advice to Management

Care just a little bit more about people. Invites to parties isn't enough.

    Pros

Everyone is very young, cool, and open to new ideas. Pay is pretty good, which you can't say about some similar publications.

    Cons

A lot of miscommunication or just a straight up lack of communication, especially when it comes to big changes. Decisions are made and then announced all of the sudden.

pretty bad hour for interning 10-6 without pay, a lot of chaos sometimes because of deadlines- always doing something different everyday and may not be able to stay on one task at a time

    Pros

Respectable company and gives you the ability to learn a lot in a fast paced environment.

    Cons

Poor salary offerings and horrendous management. Not a large enough staff to handle the output they expect.

    Advice to Management

Treat people with respect and understand that working for your company is not the most important thing in the world. They need to learn to reward people better for their hard work.
