    Avoid the Milwaukee consulting branch

Information Analyst (Former Employee) Milwaukee, WI

ProsVariety of assignments. Staff includes a wide assortment of interesting people.

ConsLong periods of "bench time"—expected to be in the office with no duties. No telecommute option; no leeway given for bad weather or other emergencies. Severely antiquated equipment (e.g., huge fifteen-year-old monitors that leave no room on the desk for a keyboard). High-pressure environment; some account managers are bullying and rude. Unattractive work environment in an out-of-the-way location (West Allis).

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue transition to a more effective, robust organization. Stay involved with marketing, social media efforts. Keep the lines of communication. Squash any and all silos.

    Used to be better

Team Lead (Current Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsNew management improving benefits for vacation time, 401K matching. Nice office downtown with wellness center, cafe and other amenities.

ConsNeed to improve sales performance. Revenue has gone down every year, requiring layoffs, but they don't seem to be able to fix the sales problems.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to shake up the upper management

    Professional Services Division Identity Crisis

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsCompuware flourished under the founding and leadership of Peter Karmanos, Jr. Both the pros and cons are changing rapidly since his 2013 retirement, however. Pros are the people. Compuware has been able to attract and retain very talented people in a wide variety of disciplines.

ConsSenior management is very much an old boys' network and does not communicate with downstream professionals effectively. There are few if any opportunities for advancement, and they can't figure out whether they want to be a staff augmentation company or a technology solutions provider. Senior management is terrible at listening, and they value long-standing (old) relationships over substance, productivity, efficiency, and quality. They come up with ideas based on faulty assumptions and have middle managers that push all accountability downward. With few exceptons middle managers do not plan, execute or lead at Compuware and senior sanagement rarely holds the middle managers accountable. This has got to be one of the least diverse companies I've ever worked for. If it weren't for the flood of Southeast Asian guest workers, this company would would be nearly all white and male. Quite disappointing in city with Detroit's history and demography.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are some important lessons to learn from colleagues at the street level. Make promotions and bonuses merit-based, and force annual (or more frequent) changes in middle management organization. Get a standard set of performance metrics and measure everyone the same way at the same intervals. Also, you should invest in formal training for your entire workforce and grow competencies from within rather than constantly trying to hire from the outside or off-shore.

Compuware is a company with unrealized potential.

Director of Business Development (Current Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsAs an employee you will generally be able to operate independently as long as you are willing to utilize Compuware's traditional strategy.

ConsCompuware's unrealized potential is due to them clinging to old approaches. Additionally they have no marketing of any quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the size and responsibility of the marketing department. Increase the number of VPs who have experience from other companies. Compuware needs new blood.

A once great company continues to decline

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsPay is decent, benefits are good and there are some good people.

Consstale leadership, yes men/women in middle and upper management, old school management by intimidation and no accountability

Advice to Senior ManagementClean house across the organization and get rid of the old crony management. Quit trying to find a place for them to do the least amount of damage...it doesn't work. Bring in some real talent with real world experience, leaders who have experience somewhere besides CPWR. You can't drive innovation and inspire your people by beating the same old rusty drum.
