    Pros

-If your work matters to you - ConEd provides a useful and vital service to NY. There are many in the ranks who are dedicated, and keep the city running. -Great work hours. Good pay and 8 hrs -- a luxury these days - Stability and health benefits

    Cons

-Coming from a developing country, I though I left a lot behind. Not so fast. Welcome to Con Ed for flashbacks. Nepotism, favoritism and cronyism, dinosaurs, fossil technology, old style hierarchy, the good old 8 hour punch.... -Nepotism is rampant. Search Outlook via last name. Last Names appear in groups. This is not common just among Union employees, but Management too. Supposedly a public company -- on observation, the company is passed on between generations, and jobs are meant to be 'inherited'. Place has a good chunk of those who would not find a reasonable position in the competitive corporate environment, but can find something here via a near/distant relative. -Very old fashioned. If you are used to working in the usual corporate environment, or a matrix organization, do not step in here (at least most teams, with a few exceptions). Very hierarchical. Company is structured in such a way that direct managers can cut off your contact with the larger company if they wish to, and can end up being the only point of contact between you and ConEd. -- Beware - Good performance could work to your disadvantage. It is a stable job, with a lot of people who have been around for some time. If you are new or technologically savvy or have a fresh new perspective, being with the wrong manager can mean they can exercise their position to ensure you stay as long as possible in the same circumstance. This is all the more possible because of the old fashioned hierarchies, and lack of access to external resources (skip level, parallel groups etc). Bottom line - don't perform any more than you need to. To be on the safe side, underperform. Those who perform below expectations seem to have an easier time being moved into another group

    Advice to Management

You need to focus on the mid-level management. There is vision at the very top, and lot of hard work and motivation at the very bottom.
