I have been working at Con Edison of New York full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very exciting. No two days are the same, and no one else can boast that what they do helps keeps the big apple shining!

    Cons

In consistant management with the ranks of Middle-Management where managers are forced to mange to numbers not big picture goals. Internal politics often stifel new ideas. Recent change to Management Compensation Program has painfully hilarious process in that the Human Resource Department couldn't even explain the program when is was rolled out. Finally, too much time is spent "reinventing the wheel" where commonly available business tools can be gotten right off the shelf rather than designed from scratch in-house.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be faithful to your employees and do not underestimate their feelings, or the value of their institutional knowledge. Also, it is really hard to swallow in one week you tell the public the business is doing really well and the board is again raising dividends, and then you turn around and tell Management we have to cut our budgets and forego preventative and corrective maintenace on our equipment and infrastructure and deal with the consequences.

I worked at Con Edison of New York full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are tons of opportunities to move up within the company. At my office, my coworkers treated me like family immediately.

    Cons

Since it's a utility company, you absolutely must be there at the hardest times to get to work: during blackouts, severe weather, etc.

  8.

Its a great place to work with the potential to advance if you work for it.

    Pros

Large company has alot of mobility in many areas but you must work for it and prove yourself before any sort of advancement can occur.

    Cons

No regular pension for new employees any longer and management benefits have changed in that the retirement age has increased and sick time decreased.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you dot your i's and cross your t's on everything you write.

I worked at Con Edison of New York as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

My position as an Administrative Assistant at Con Edison was challenging and intensive amount of work which I enjoyed because there was never a down time. co-workers are pleasant.

    Cons

Con Edison lacks work ethics, lacks organizational skills, unprofessional work environment. Management and Union employees are unpleasant to contractors because they feel threaten. Union employees complete very little work and the contractors are taken advantage for this reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Contractors should be treated with respect and proper understanding. I was there to help them not replace anyone.

I have been working at Con Edison of New York full-time

    Pros

    Good pay
    Job Security is good

    Cons

Key Performance Indicators are driving management people.
They say safety is number one priority but in reality they want you to do whatever it takes to get job done.
    Benefits are not that great.
Not a lot of ability to move, all of the opening are per-selected and it is not really Equal Opportunity.
New cost cutting techniques that they use are just in place for upper management to increase their yearly bonuses.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
