    Pros

Okay pay, union has pension, room for advancement

    Cons

Benefits keeps increasing, it's who you know not what you know to get into upper management, good ole boys club - makes it difficult for women to" fit in" in male dominant departments.

    Pros

Stable job, Nice people to work with, Great work-life balance. Full tuition reimbursement, but must stay 2 years after graduation to keep money. Good company if you are close to retirement.

    Cons

Raises are slow- 2-3% per year. If you are young, It is easy to get comfortable. Company does not aggressive with respect to change. Pensions are going away soon. The mantra is if is working good, leave it that way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees financially and they would stay.

    Pros

There is a wealth of experience and knowledge. Many employees that I spoke with were with the company for many years. People are generally friendly and in the department that I was assigned to they were willing to show me how things were done correctly.

    Cons

This is a large company and it may be hard to be recognized for your work. Also it might be hard to be promoted if you don't know the right person or make the right moves when it comes to switching from a department.

    Pros

Get to interact everyday with new and interesting people.

    Cons

Not always have the privacy I need to be able to focus more on my tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read journals and articles written on open floor plans. They don't work as well as you would like them to, they don't effect the change you want to see in your workforce.

Reliable, solid company for benefits and salary; high-pressure "traditional" management style

Current Employee - Section Manager in New York, NY

    Pros

Excellent employees, dedicated and energetic and highly competent technically

    Cons

Old-fashioned hierarchal management mentality; very little room for disagreement or alternative management styles. Attitude of upper management tends to be "you are very lucky to work here" rather than "how do I retain and fulfill employees?" Currently undergoing major shifts in demographics due to the end of traditional pensions for management in 2000; very modern and mobile young employees clash with 40-year veterans whose main focus is maximizing pension benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage employees to challenge managers; encourage managers to be more inclusive. Nothing damages morale and undermines results as much as a manager saying "the reason we are doing it this way is above your paygrade and you do not need to know why, just do it".

    Pros

Job stability is number one here. Benefits are decent but have become very expensive over time (for both management and union). Career growth is possible with some motivation, some luck and a LOT of connections.

    Cons

Very very old fashioned, feels like a time warp to the 1960s. Culture and values completely out of touch with reality and their employees needs. Very inflexible should personal issues come up.Technologically behind on the times, making day to day work frustrating.Depending on the department, staff can be very unmotivated, making for a very unproductive work force.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Encourage and respect your peers.
