I have been working at ConAgra Foods

    Pros

THERE is honestly not a down side they treat you like family and is normally very understanding. The pay is equal to the work even the overtime.

    Cons

Hard to advance to the next level. Training could be a little better and more focused. The boss
biggest thing would be the better communication between the department's

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better mixing of the training for the middle and entry level employees.

I worked at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

ConAgra has some great, well known brands that are fun to work on. The benefits are overall pretty solid. Summer Fridays and casual dress code help create a comfortable environment. Many of the employees and managers are great, hard working people.

    Cons

First, location location location. Omaha, Nebraska is not the best city. Coming from the Coast, it's been a painful adjustment. There's just not much there and it's too far from anything desirable. Cheaper, but not worth it. Second, the soon to be departing CEO has made a lot of whiffs lately, the biggest one being the acquisition of RalCorp. Funds once used to grow the company are now being used to rescue this disaster, and along the way other areas of the company have suffered. Lay offs have happened unfortunately due to this and some of the more talented employees saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship on their own accord. At the time of my departure, which was on my own terms, their were whispers of the company being sold or going private and in talking to a friend that still works there, I've heard those rumors only growing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Gary Rodkin needs to go. He was great at the beginning, but his streak of misses is hurting the company. The company needs to seriously consider relocating HQ to a more desirable city, like Chicago, Denver, Austin or Minneapolis, in order to recruit and retain talent. After leaving, I quickly packed my bags and headed to another city with more opportunity. The focus needs to be honed and the company needs to find their way again or the rumors of the company being sold will only continue.

I have been working at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The work-life balance is great. Half-day Fridays in the summer, flexible work arrangements and ability to work from home are awesome perks.

    Cons

Company changes like the wind. Lots of turnover and unclear expectations at the lower levels make daily work environment frustrating. There's also a serious diversity problem. If you're a white male wtih a finance background, you'll do very well at ConAgra.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start valuing diversity of thought, background, and leadership style. Just because someone isn't like you doesn't mean they aren't valuable and worth advancing in the company.

    Pros

    - Stable business and a large company
    - Latest technologies to be hands on

    Cons

Weak management as they are too young when put in that position. Human/Soft skills are lacking to make them work as managers. Most of them are not mature enough to look at best interest of the company's succession managers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make decisions in the best interest of the company and also take a long look for the company's succession planning/implementation.

I have been working at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company provides amazing benefits to the employees, including "Summer hours", knowledge workers are able to leave work at 1 PM on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, along with 401K, Medical, Dental, Life, Disability, etc. The company also has workout facilities at most office locations. ConAgra Foods also encourages continued education, offer tuition reimbursement, and provide many wonderful classes for all levels to attend.

    Cons

Leadership were too aggressive with acquisitions that they purchased Ralcorp, a private brand manufacturing company. ConAgra Foods paid way too much for this company and the integration efforts have required extensive more resources than expected. This portion of the company has also been struggling and continues to lose business. This has caused the need to cut to the bone on expenses meaning the elimination of hundreds of jobs. These cuts have led to too much work and not enough resources. Keeping a work-life-balance has become extremely difficult to meet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A change in leadership at all the upper levels needs is needed to get this ship righted.

    Pros

    Good people
    Fair pay and benefits
Big company offering variety of roles

    Cons

Lots of people looking to jump ship right now and many good people have left
    Lack of accountability
Highly matrixed and lots of finger pointing
    Inconsistent messages to broader org
Need transformational CEO and some new blood at the senior exec level
Private brands business not performing and not sure is a fit with CAG branded biz
Talent mgmt is done but not used when making people decisions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be courageous in setting strategy and be disciplined in execution
Don't settle for mediocrity - be willing to make the tough calls in people and business issues alike
Realize that running the same play over and over hoping for a different outcome will not work

I worked at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay, flexible work hours, great Summer Hours (early dismissal on Fridays), dress for the day. They hire the best and brightest, great people to work with.

    Cons

Very fragmented business units/matrixed organization who are all vying for control/ownership of marketing strategy, limited ability to change our internal business practices based on evolving competitive landscape and consumer needs, very limited career growth opportunities. Lots of silos in the organization despite attempts to create one culture, many groups have their own hidden agendas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are solid strategies, but we (internally) are our own enemies. Too slow to evolve to meet the changing tides. Matrixed organization creates a lot of unnecessary churn, extra layers of approvals, making it slower to implement change

So Much Potential, but Disappointing Overall

I worked at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

ConAgra Foods has several soft benefits that make life a little bit easier: dress for your day (allowing for jeans outside of important business days), flexible work arrangements (allowing for flexible times and telecommuting), summer Fridays (between memorial and labor day, Fridays getting out at 1PM). There is a lot of potential for future business results.

    Cons

Leadership generally has a lot of in-fighting, creating political battles throughout the organization. The company will have a year of greater than 100% incentive payout to the next year being 20% incentive payout. There is very much a roller coaster effective

I worked at ConAgra Foods full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits and - for the most part - day to day working conditions. Talk about operating principles and ways we win, but senior leaders don't walk the talk.

    Cons

Really nice people, but organization is driven by culture of "go along to get along" vs. driving for results. Results focused individuals don't have very long lives - they don't fit in. Those who don't "fit in" end up finding themselves marginalized and either out on their own or out with the next reorganization. Leaders promote "cliques" and don't mask indifference or disdain for others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at who is leaving - and why. Exit surveys won't give you the answers.
