Rearranging Deck Chairs on the Titanic

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Condé Nast full-time for more than 5 years

ProsCache. Name recognition. World-class brands.

ConsVery little work-life balance. Politics of pretty. Lots of big egos. Print people are afraid of digital and trying extra hard to assert their power. It's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. The ship is still sinking.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive those who work hard opportunities for growth. Not just the rich, white former sorority girls with the cute shoes.

Good place to learn bleeding edge skills.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Condé Nast

ProsWorking here is amazing. Most managers allow you the freedom to learn new things and actually apply them.

ConsBreak neck speed. You spend a lot of time sprinting even though you should pacing for a marathon.

The most respected brands in Publishing

Account Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Condé Nast full-time for more than 3 years

ProsAmazing brands, moving to new office in WTC, good management teams, healthy competition between titles at CN.

ConsTo capitalize on maximum compensation, you have to leave the company and get hired back to Conde Nast. This mantra is slowly changing.

Advice to Senior ManagementFoster the growth and development of talent within Conde Nast.

Great place to start out!

IT Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Condé Nast full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompany has great energy and the people are fantastic.

ConsConstantly re-inventing itself, so you never know if you or your department are on the cutting block every year.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your people. You do not always need to bring in outside people for your transformation goals.

It is not a great company to work for, contrary to some reviews

Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Condé Nast full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe history of the company carries more weight and prestige than most other publishers. Sufficient funding for current areas of interest.

ConsStaffers in Sales are the only ones "taken care of." Everyone else works extraordinary hours for no recognition, no raise, and no avenue for promotion. You are expected to stay ahead of the curve in skills, but without opportunities to update those skills. Extremely arrogant--everyone works in silos, fearful of repercussions so teamwork is limited. They are quite willing to fire you once they determine you have been there too long and might cost them more money in benefits/pensions/salary.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut your mouth where your money is ... in your people. You pay substantially for them over the years, make sure they grow and are positioned properly to assist in developing the company's future.

A unique place indeed-though each mag is different

Producer (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Condé Nast as a contractor

ProsThere are a lot of good people to connect with if you can navigate the culture. If you are on a good team-and I was-the people can be great. Looks pretty decent on your resume.

ConsLives up to the reputation of being a place where you hear plenty of people talking about others behind people's backs. Hard to move up, or to transition sideways to different work. Very old-media attitude towards the web.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire some more people that don't fit the Condé "image" and it'll be a better and more interesting place.

Executive Directors who treat their assistants like garbage

Ad Sales Assistant (Former Employee)

I worked at Condé Nast full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat reputation, high standards (as a first job it will be all you know), and working with the industry's best.

ConsDirectors who treat their assistants like garbage, curse them out, belittle them in front of co-workers, and constantly working in fear.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay your assistants overtime and treat them like human beings. They will be taking your jobs one day.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Hard work with little reward

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Condé Nast full-time for more than 5 years

ProsYou work with interesting and highly talented people to put out the most compelling editorial content and magazines in the world. You can be proud of the end product we all work to create.

ConsFacebook and Google this is not. It depends on your department, but generally there are not a lot of perks in the workplace. Conde Nast is notorious for underpaying and overworking you, so be ready work hard. Looks great on the resume though.

Advice to Senior ManagementReward those who work hard.
