    Amazing Internship Opportunity!

ProsI worked as a student at Conestoga College in the Career Centre. I learned amazing things from some amazing women! It was my best work experience. Very flexible with my scheduling.

ConsAbsolutely nothing-pay was to be expected as a student.

There are major trade-offs to work here

    Associate Professor (Current Employee)
    Kitchener, ON (Canada)

ProsAutonomy, control over day to day work. Working with adult students is very rewarding. An opportunity to truly help others.

ConsThe bureaucracy is extreme. There is a negative culture. People are afraid to speak up and share good ideas, no one wants to be found at fault so there is a tendency to blame others.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe organization needs to listen to those who work there. I would recommend conducting employee engagement surveys.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Rapidly growing

    Instructor (Current Employee)
    Kitchener, ON (Canada)

ProsThe college is growing rapidly so there is good job security

ConsBecause of the rapid growth, workload can be overwhelming at times, but not likely that much different than any other industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport your staff and understand most employees are there because they are committed to the client. Don't paint everyone with the same brush if you do have a few poor performers.

A great place to learn about the ins and outs of higher education

    Associate Professor (Former Employee)
    Waterloo, ON (Canada)

ProsVery supportive colleagues and a positive environment to learn while doing.

ConsPart-time/contract work is in reality a full-time commitment; therefor compensation resentment and burnout becomes the end result.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to find the sweet spot where there is some real continuity and integrity in program delivery, and not just a bums-in-seats model.

Good if you are seeking a stable job ( if you are in the union), but very limited opportunity for growth.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Kitchener, ON (Canada)

ProsGenerous defined benefit pension, 35 hour work week for Support staff, good Faculty jobs, family friendly, parental leave top up, stable.

ConsLittle room for growth, underwhelming staff who 'left their jobs years ago', management salaries are mediocre, lacks strong management.

    Seniority only criterium

    Admini Clerk (Current Employee)
    Kitchener, ON (Canada)

ProsDecent pay and benefits. Pleasant environment - picturesque campus.

ConsNon-management jobs are given out based on seniority because it is a union workplace. Therefore, alot of people are in team lead positions simply because they have put in the time. It is frustrating to not be able to get ahead based on merit, and to have to take instruction from someone who is incompetent.

Advice to Senior ManagementA different ratio of merit-to-seniority is required in order to trim the fat.
