I have been working at Conestoga College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good school for degree & non-degree program

    Cons

Majority of the students don't have strong academic background

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the number of courses that students must take every semester to about 5 courses instead of 6-8 courses/semester.

I have been working at Conestoga College full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Autonomy, control over day to day work. Working with adult students is very rewarding. An opportunity to truly help others.

    Cons

The bureaucracy is extreme. There is a negative culture. People are afraid to speak up and share good ideas, no one wants to be found at fault so there is a tendency to blame others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The organization needs to listen to those who work there. I would recommend conducting employee engagement surveys.

I have been working at Conestoga College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The college is growing rapidly so there is good job security

    Cons

Because of the rapid growth, workload can be overwhelming at times, but not likely that much different than any other industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your staff and understand most employees are there because they are committed to the client. Don't paint everyone with the same brush if you do have a few poor performers.

I worked at Conestoga College as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very supportive colleagues and a positive environment to learn while doing.

    Cons

Part-time/contract work is in reality a full-time commitment; therefor compensation resentment and burnout becomes the end result.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to find the sweet spot where there is some real continuity and integrity in program delivery, and not just a bums-in-seats model.
