Consno work-life balance, bullying, high turnover

Advice to Senior ManagementBullies do a lot of damage in your organisation, please stop them.

Horrible place if you expect to learn anything, make any money, or move up

Engineer (Former Employee)

I worked at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates full-time for more than 3 years

ProsDecent work life balance, not a whole lot of OT required.
If you have a good relationship with upper management then good things "may" happen.

ConsLow pay raises if any, always making excuses of why there are low raises
No training/mentoring of younger staff members although the company "plan"/motto says they plan on doing it
Always want you to be at least 90% billable which is nearly impossible if you take vacation, holidays, actually bill the time you "really" work
Hard workers don't get rewarded

Advice to Senior ManagementDo something for your younger employees for once

Good opportunities, but underpaid and over worked.

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood opportunities to expand knowledge and experience.

ConsSeverely underpaid and over utilized; Everything comes down to numbers regardless of value to the company; Turnover is higher than desired; Turnover without replacement is leading to overworked employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensate your employees that show value to the company.

Shareholders expect employees to work a lot to be "billable" but yet with little recognition

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates full-time for more than 8 years

ProsAt first there were, but no pros - employees are treated poorly

ConsUsed to be a "family oriented" environment, however became the exact opposite of that. Now a very political envirnoment where managers harass thier employees and HR does nothing about it; even with numerous complaints...........its about who you know and if you are willing to put in 50 hours a week, to ensure billability, in order to advance, if you don't want to, well then you will never advance - quote un-quote

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that people you promote to manage employees are capable of doing it, give them training and monitor them by getting feedback from the employees;

Get with reality, share the wealth.

IT Department (Current Employee)

I have been working at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates full-time

ProsFlexability, the company SEEMS to be ppro family.

ConsLow pay, unless you get X-Bonus. Diffrent set of rules apply to upper management so be prepared to be treated like you are 2nd class. Insurance is very expensive. Do the work of 4 while getting paid below market.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay the people what they are worth, NOT what you think you can get away with. Dont base your paygrade on what some society of enginers in Canada says they should make but on the local market.

Be willing to work long hours

Project Manager (Former Employee)
Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I worked at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThere is an opportunity to work on projects throughout North America and gain a lot of experience on various types of projects working with a lot of great people.

ConsThe company is very much an old boys club with an expectation to work 50 plus hours every week. If you are not willing to work long hours your career will not go anywhere; definitely not a job for someone who wants to spend time with their family.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a much needed change needed in the perception of hard work, and should not solely be based on the hours worked. Bonuses should not only be awarded to those who work long hours, many employees work very hard and accomplish a great deal in a regular work day.

Overwhelming at first, difficult to find your place, but very rewarding when you do.

Student Engineering Assistant (Current Employee)
Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates

Pros-Fair Salary
-Great People (in my work group anyways)
-Enjoyable social events (box hockey seats - free food and drinks)
-Fast Paced Leading Edge Work

Cons-Overwhelming to start without knowing any CRA work standards (aka very difficult to be comparably productive as co-workers)
-Constant work to do, have to charge every 30 minutes of your time to a project code (but hey, that is why they call it work)
-4% vacation pay, too little IMO

Advice to Senior Management-Restrict the amount of repetitive work given to certain people (often people who are just really good at one thing, so find it difficult to find the time to learn something else)

I wouldn't recommend...

Intermediate Engineer (Current Employee)
Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates

Pros- Good people to work with (excluding managers) the people who you work with in the trenches
- Satisfactory extra activities

Cons- Not willing to get with the times and improve technology that is being used; very old school in approach
- People are over worked and very underpaid (very low end of OSPE salary survey, and they participate in the survey!)
- Morale is low because people are tired of wokring 50+/week
- Absolutely no work/life balance

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen your boss asks you to come and work on the weekend, or take your work with you on vacation without any compensation or benefit, well, you figure out the rest...

Stuck in the Middle

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates

ProsGood place to work in a poorly compensated industry as a whole
Steady employment for some sectors

ConsWay, way, way too much work/responsibilities heaped on project managers
Canadian/east coast company - almost no opportunity for advancement in other offices.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet off of the billability/drumming up more work bandwagon and pay attention to the quality of the product (knowledge work.) Truly integrate skill sets across offices - right now it's managed like GM was, with different companies (offices) under one umbrella. As a consequence Office A, which may require specialized expertise from Office B, is not treated as a member of the same team,, but as an opportunity for Office B staff to bill the heck out of your project - with no consequences.

Just ok

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Waterloo, ON (Canada)

I worked at Conestoga-Rovers & Associates

ProsExtensive social events, faced paced work

ConsLack of work/life balance, lack of recognition to employees who deserve it, promotion of those employees that don't deserve it.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook to recognize and reward the employees that are truly putting in the work rather than those who are part of the 'old boys' club.'
