I worked at Connecticut College as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

This is an interesting place: they do a lot on a low budget. The school has all attributes of elite liberal arts school but a very easy, down-to-earth atmosphere. As faculty, I got a lot of freedom in planning my classes, help from my colleagues and administrative assistants, great learning opportunities from center for teaching and learning, great computing infrastructure.

    Cons

My only disappointment was the pay, but it's low for adjuncts everywhere.

    I worked at Connecticut College

    Pros

Enthusiastic people, but not so hectic schedule. Salary is fine as long as you don't shoot for a spiffy amount. Lot of locals working, so quite a familial feeling in the office - most of them are neighbors somehow.

    Cons

As with any other college, the students are difficult to deal with sometimes; especially if they are the problem. You need to vent if you're in a position to directly interact with unhappy students. They tend to come with a higher than average sense of entitlement esp if their parents pay full tuition. Roll with the punches, they're not too hard. Upper management takes care of nasty cases.

I worked at Connecticut College full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Most of the staff "underlings" are wonderful to work with and friendly. The campus is well kept and there has been forward momentum for a few years now. There is more staff here than most other colleges of its size.

The benefits are fantastic! Summer hours, great med/dental/health, more vacation time than usual, but that doesn't mean you can always take advantage -- depends on your manager.

The New London area offers access to beaches, great restaurants, history, and relatively inexpensive housing. It's also less than an hour from three major cities, but far from other amenities you may be used to if coming from a larger city.

    Cons

What the college makes up for in prestige, it lacks in endowment, forward-thinking, and management. The atmosphere is highly political, which has left the college at least 10 years behind its competitors, and there's little to no room for professional growth or risk taking.

The competitiveness between senior admins, and the lack of a senior VP to make them all "play nice," frequently trickles down to middle management, making for a less than favorable work environment. Should you be unlucky, don't rely on HR to be in your corner as they are #4 down the line of authority.

The New London area is also in a decline and lacks diverse activity and business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is NOT about you. Put your ego and personal agendas aside and allow Connecticut College to stand tall and proud. Put to practice the values you say you want the college to have and regulate bad business practices. The world does not revolve around the faculty and the alums.
