Pros
They pay well along with providing you with opportunities that you would not find anywhere else. In addition they have numerous social functions to bring the company together.
Cons
They are a big cooperation so sometimes you can feel as if you are very small even when you have been working there a while.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership should involve lower level employees in more of the business related decisions which would give employees a greater sense of purpose.
Pros
Great compensation and benefits. Challenging work atmosphere. Working for COP makes you bring out your best competencies to stand out. It allows you to learn and develop professionally at the top of your game.
Cons
Promotions and career groth is somewhat limited. There is little space to become a supervisor or to manage your career. It mosly depends on management's perceptions of your abilities.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve on the use of the talent management sytem to properly identify the right competencies for the open positions. Promote more opportunities to move within the company to allow for greater career development.
Pros
Good pay and decent benefits. Could be much better on medical benefits.
Interesting work
Excellent team
Retention bonus
New technology
Busy
Cons
Poor camp accommodations but new ones on the way
High Staff turnover
Poor safety record
Clawing back on some of the benefits that attracted me here such as additional days off and flights.
A lot of Expats (Americans), which can be considered good or bad.
Too much empowerment given to contractors, find some of them very condescending.
Micromanagement, Vindictive bosses.
Advice to Senior Management
Management has to realize the Canadian Oilsands operations is different then other Business Units. It's a rapidly expanding area with a limited supply of skilled workers and competition for these workers is fierce with rival Oil companies. Extra effort must be given to recruit and retain the best staff, pay, benefits and living conditions are important in doing this. Safety concerns of the employees need to be addressed reguardless of the seriousness. Also instead of summary firing of employees for fairly trivial reasons try disciple, training or counselling to correct undesidered behavior. I find the constant staff changes quite demorlizing. Plus instead of streamining operations, we seemed to be in a constant retraining mode.
Pros
Decent salary, flexible schedules, fairly good benefits, good networking opportunities
Cons
Lack of promotional opportunities, spotty recognition, work/life balance tilted heavily to work
Advice to Senior Management
Replace supervisors who are not doing their jobs effectively, and add elements to their performance reviews . Promote and encourage feedback from bottom up on supervisor performance. Re-balance workloads to insure those who have little to do take on work from those who have too much to do.
Pros
ConocoPhillips is a great place to work.
Cons
You can get lost within the size of the company.
Advice to Senior Management
Work hard.
Pros
Benefits, People, Opportunities, Customers, Industry
Cons
Constant changes and loss of focus on marketing segment.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your field personel not those in cubicles.
Pros
Incomparable compensation packages and a seemingly endless supply of new positions, locations around the world, and career paths. We have many team-building and morale-building activities and celebrations that add to the enjoyable environment also. I felt that my manager was personally invested in my career development and aided me in furthering my career, even when it meant transferring to another group.
Cons
The commute--didn't want to live in a small town and it's an hour of highway driving to get there from a larger city. It's also a long drive at our company headquarters in Houston, but that's more common in that metro area. I enjoyed traveling, but it could also be taxing for others with families/children/other responsibilities. Safety is hugely important but the company sometimes goes overboard.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue improving work/life balance and the intangibles that young professionals are seeking (things like telecommuting and more flexible work schedules).
Pros
Pay and benefits .....that's it.
Cons
No tolerance for making mistakes. Instead of coaching and learning from experiences, they look at it as an opportunity for discipline.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve coaching and improve employee appreciation.
Pros
compensation is fair.
Schedule is great.
Cons
Kept in the dark
Low morale
Advice to Senior Management
Make leadership as responsible for mistakes as much as low level employees.
Pros
Good pay and benefits
You can manage your own career
Cons
Employees are regularly surprised by big announcements from upper management, many of which can affect peoples employment
Lack of clarity on career paths
Advice to Senior Management
Some decisions appear to be short-sighted and do not necessarily bring long-term value to the company.
