Current Employee – been working at ConocoPhillips
Pros – At ConocoPhillips, in most work groups the work/life balance is pretty good: if you need time off for vacation or if you are sick, supervisors are usually very understanding. The benefits (health, vision, perscription) are very good and there is a big push toward over-all wellness (physical, mental). Very nice gym facility at the main complex and a lot of outside programs to get involved in. (Rodeo Run, United Way, Employee Networks)
Cons – There are many layers of management at ConocoPhillips and that makes it extremely hard to get any work done or to feel any sense of ownership of a role. While it is possible to get a new role and develop professionally at ConocoPhillips, there are a lot of politics at play and there are Talent Management Teams (TMT's) that play a huge role in placing employees in new roles that are not always in the employees best interest and development, it's usually for the benefit of the company. Promotions are on a strict time-in-grade and performance rating schedule, so for a strong performer it can be a lot of years between promotions. This makes it very dificult to have a strong career at the company unless you are a favorite of the TMT's or have a strong supporter in management. The norm is to have very weak/poor supervisors or managers. They are working supervisors so they don't have the time, energy or interest in developing employees. Most of the poor treatment of employees comes from top management and employees are seen as very expendable.
Advice to Senior Management – Managers and supervisors need to have better training. Remove some layers of management so it's easier to get things done. Make it easier to get promotions.

Former Employee – worked at ConocoPhillips
Pros – As mentioned earlier, Retirement and benefits.
Cons – The usual issues that come with a large corporation. Too much "red tape" and communication between departments is often lacking.
The upcoming split (into two separate companies) appears to be driven by the desire to create one rather lucrative company and one company designed to absorb all of the negative feedback from the press and the EPA. This is great for stockholders but about half of the company employees will take a difficult turn as a result. These reasons appear self-absorbed and reflect a cut-throat attitude.
Advice to Senior Management – I have no advice for future development as the damage has already begun and cannot be reversed at this point.

Former Employee – worked at ConocoPhillips
Pros – Good pay. Intern program is alright. Could've been much better, but the Finance and IT interns had it much better since they had a good HR manager. You get to meet a lot of people through Lunch n Learns. The problem is, the interns started separating a bit, with the finance group hanging with themselves, procurement with themselves, etc. Yet there were a fair number of interns who organized and attended social events outside of work hours.
Cons – Bartlesville is not very exciting.
Corporate bureaucracy is very very evident. VP of HR even said something along the lines of: "you'll be promoted based on how you are perceived...."
COP barely hires outside of Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas. So if you're coming from the north or anywhere else, you'll be alone.
For any prospective interns out there, this may all change after I write this because of the split. But I doubt there's going to be any culture changes. It's probably going to be the same boring corporate company like any other.
Advice to Senior Management – Be transparent; communicate with those down the hierarchy and promote based on intuitive characteristics

Former Employee – worked at ConocoPhillips
Pros – A great place to work. Great support from corporate office, senior management, and company executives. Company did not lack on communication at all! Treated their employees with respect and acknowledged them when needed.
Cons – It is a gas station- you have to have the right personality to work at a gas station. There are certain people who can do it, and others who try and fail. Company sold 72 retail stores to horrible "mom and pop" company in Denver called PCF Saleco, LLC. Stores are now being run into the ground and not maintaining the ConocoPhillips name. Maintenanace issues at stores. Employee issues at stores. No loss prevention in place. No raises in years for managers. No raises for employees past 90 days. No bonuses.

Former Employee – worked at ConocoPhillips
Pros – Incomparable compensation packages and a seemingly endless supply of new positions, locations around the world, and career paths. We have many team-building and morale-building activities and celebrations that add to the enjoyable environment also. I felt that my manager was personally invested in my career development and aided me in furthering my career, even when it meant transferring to another group.
Cons – The commute--didn't want to live in a small town and it's an hour of highway driving to get there from a larger city. It's also a long drive at our company headquarters in Houston, but that's more common in that metro area. I enjoyed traveling, but it could also be taxing for others with families/children/other responsibilities. Safety is hugely important but the company sometimes goes overboard.
Advice to Senior Management – Continue improving work/life balance and the intangibles that young professionals are seeking (things like telecommuting and more flexible work schedules).
