I worked at Container Store part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone was friendly. They do pay higher than a lot of other retail. Pretty flexible with scheduling. The employee discount is decent.

    Cons

They tend to watch the sales very carefully and if the numbers are low they will send employees home or call them to not come in. They make you buy your shirts. With a low salary it can become expensive. Management will play favorites. The employees that work the truck unloading shift have no incentive for staying on this shift. They work the hardest and don't make enough money to make it worth the hard labor. You have to drink the Kool aid that they call training. Having a store meeting early Sunday morning to tell everyone how wonderful the company is, is not trainng. Also, they push the selling of Elfa (custom closet) but there's no incentive to sell it when a designer makes no commission. You do skilled design work and can spend hours doing it but make the same salary as the person standing at the front door welcoming customers.

    Advice to Management

The salary structure needs to change and cutting back hours to the point where no one makes any money.

I worked at Container Store full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay Scale relative to other retailers, Mostly genuine good people work for this company, 401k matching, Annual raises are a better scale than most retailers, Certain benefits are offered that are not offered by other retailers, employee discount is good, training is very good

    Cons

Accepting greater responsibility is not recognized in pay scale or in offers for advancement, merchandise processing shifts are very difficult and are not given any incentive to stay, retail hours, after hours projects are frequent, frequent overnight or very early morning shifts required, little work-life balance, "Communication Is Leadership" is a foundation principle that often is not followed by upper management, medical benefits are below average with very high premiums, no incentives for sales or accomplishments, no bonuses, company payroll expectations have decreased by 4% in last few years resulting in much tougher work-loads for full-time employees, full-time employees asked to ravel to help with other store opening with no incentive or compensation to offset increased family expenses, scheduling is inconsistent

    Advice to Management

Allow for better work-life balance, offer better health care options for full-time employees, post internal jobs for employees, offer bonuses or pay scale incentives for employees who regularly contribute to overnights, merchandise processing, early mornings, bonuses for sales related accomplishments, offer qualified Christmas/holiday bonus

    Pros

Great coworkers on the prime time team

    Cons

I recently went from being a full-time employee to a prime time (part-time employee), and after being with the company a little over a year, I left emotionally battered. The management team was quick to tell me when I was struggling but offered no specific feedback or direction. After finding out my role was being eliminated, I was left feeling insecure about my career path and my future with TCS. I left for another position that is far less stressful, with much better pay and benefits, and it was the best decision I could have made.

    Advice to Management

Understand that not all leaders fit into a cookie-cutter mold and try to be more in touch with your team.

I worked at Container Store part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The store is bright, colorful and stocked with useful merchandise, for the most part.

    Cons

Employees are treated like cattle-rushed, pushed-to extract every ounce of effort. No room for individual ideas. Negative opinions about labor unions from ownership. Company wants rah rah employees who can be easily molded to their doctrine. Minuscule chance for more than 15-20 hours per week.

    Advice to Management

Step outside of the five person management clique. Hire for enough hours to allow workers to afford a minimal living existence.

I have been working at Container Store part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

management has open communication corporate shares information [ less so since IPO however] very good extensive ongoing training programs fun environment good pay for retail hard to not get a pay raise every year lots of feedback on performance great discount casual work uniform

    Cons

it's a very physical job, even when you are in sales like most places: it depends on the local management team and your co-workers. A few bad apples can ruin it for everybody. a bit too "cult like" and forced happiness. way too much micro-managing [the company was not like this when I started many years ago] If you are hiring "the best of the best" etc then why do you treat people like they are in High School? Slowly every bit of "creativity" is being taken away in the Elfa Design process [we simply input info into a program and it spits out a "design"] The IS department seems to be entrenched and I have never worked for a company that has had as many computer software and network issues as this one. Keeps adding functions to the store and computer networks and systems cannot keep up [always going "off line" etc] customer service is going way down due to not enough staff to keep up with all the new added "services" we are providing

    Advice to Management

everything now seems to be $$$ and payroll hours etc. We cannot properly "sell" if there are not enough salespeople to man the phones and assist on the floor. It's a vicious cycle.

I have been working at Container Store part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

TCS trains you!! Yes, even part timers. A little overbearing, but you can take all that good training and do your job! If you are having issues with your schedule, they allow you to make changes, and don't make a fuss about it. They do want you to work more than just 1 day a week, unless it has been pre-arranged. All employees I work with are actually very nice people. And everyone does more than pull their weight!!

    Cons

Stickler for lateness... they don't like it... it's not a Con... it's a warning for those who are constantly late!

    Advice to Management

Give a little, especially to your P/T. Many of them have families and this is their second job... they will always give you 200%! but a little from you and they will give you 300% Other than that... Good Show! Love the store and love working there!

I have been working at Container Store part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They pay pretty well, the employees are very committed to helping their customers, and everyone is pretty nice and enthusiastic about their job.

    Cons

There is no difference in pay for certain employees. Some people do way more than others, like the merchandise processing truck team. These employees work an early shift and make sure the whole store looks amazing, yet there is no additional pay or anything.

    Advice to Management

Pay based on what is learned, or maybe give raises more frequently. Perhaps every 6 months or so.
