    Pros

Very rewarding job, lots of variety in your day to keep things from getting boring, great coworkers, getting to work with awesome individuals.

    Cons

As a nonprofit, the pay is not what it could be, so it can be a struggle being able to afford living costs in the Bay Area. If you're in a situation where you can make it work, though, it's definitely worth it!

    Advice to Management

I only have had issues with external forces that management has had no control over. So, no advice for now!

I have been working at Contra Costa ARC full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are helpful and everyone gets along. Strongly belief in their mission.

    Cons

No flexibility with the schedule. No one on one supervision. Poor communication from management

    Advice to Management

If you want to increase productivity maybe you should communicate what the expectations are and let each employee know where they are at.

I worked at Contra Costa ARC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you love working with toddlers, and have an interest in autism and ABA therapy, you may enjoy the work itself. The children are very diverse in abilities, which could keep it interesting. There are serious behaviors, but that's why the kids are in early intervention. It warms your heart to see a child who had been struggling to communicate or to complete a task be able to do it finally. Playing with the children is great fun. Sick and vacation time are ok, and your birthday is a paid holiday.

    Cons

Poor training and chain of command, conflicts of interest with management (blurry boundaries), favoritism and rule bending by management for under-qualified employees, and at times it was a hostile working environment. just a heads up: by nature of the field, you will be doing a LOT of repetition day in and day out--that isn't ARC's fault, that's how ABA goes. So if you've never worked with children with autism or ABA therapies before, you need to really look into it to see if you have the patience for it.

I worked at Contra Costa ARC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with a staff that cares about the clients; the group feels connected and almost like family. You get to see the fruits of your hard work in the successes of your participants. Full-time hours. Health, dental and life benefits. Investment plan.

    Cons

Poor pay for the work being done; attracts less-experienced unfocused staff. Accessing regular meaningful training is difficult.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more staff training. Take the time to cut out the busy work and engage staff, encourage them to expand their skill-set.

  7. Love the kids, hate the upper management

    Pros

The students are wonderful. Some devoted staff that are a delight to work with. Lower management are supportive as much as they are allowed to be.

    Cons

The upper management is unsupportive of service staff and lower management. When neglectful and abusive staff are reported it is ignored and often rewarded with new positions and secret deals which provide them additional pay or benefits. Good employees end up staying late or taking home work without getting paid in order to compensate for the bad employees that are allowed to come in late, leave early, and call in sick frequently. Upper management lies constantly to staff and blames others when caught in her lies.

    Advice to Management

Retire already! Let a competent and caring person do the job you clearly aren't doing.

I have been working at Contra Costa ARC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It's great to help build your resume, good training, valuable experience, rewarding, would recommend for experience

    Cons

Poor pay for the responsibilities, only given a six hour work schedule and often need to take work home, lack of professionalism in a lot of staff, employee was caught purchasing drugs on the clock on site and wasn't reprimanded, personnel that go unpunished when caught being abusive to students

    Advice to Management

keep a better eye on abusive staff and don't make those that report the abuse feel like the attacker
