I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The county provides a good rotational program into the different engineering departments if you choose to take advantage of it. Good continuing education program.

    Cons

Slow paced, old school ideals on solving engineering problems. Old technology and practices.

I worked at Contra Costa County - California part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company encourage employees to enjoy frequent potlucks.

    Cons

Company makes very poor management decision in observing employees performance and overall of handling implementation of new programs.

    Advice to Management

Not to rely on one person point of view for the individual performance of each employee, approximate 200 employees.

    Pros

Good benefits, upward movement after probation.

    Cons

Hard to pass probation. Hire based on their needs you are nothing but a number and if they need to cut numbers before probation ends they will.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are a LOT of truly dedicated quality people at Public Works (funded by gas tax-NOT "my tax dollars") There are people that want and try to do the right thing in a ridiculously political bureaucracy (BOS) that benefits the "haves" - Think Danville, Alamo, Knightsen, Kensington. The people stay because they've been here too long and are invested emotionally and/or need the flexibility of 9/80 or 4/10 schedules.

    Cons

Pay is the lowest in Northern California - El Dorado County pays the same and housing is 1/3 of what it is in Contra Costa. Raises are negated by take-aways - The pay-scale is flat for the last 7 years. No free coffee or bottled water (like in corporate) - health premiums are not affordable, something is askew with the Retirement Board - contributions have doubled in the last 8 years and when people cash out, the County money stays in the Retirement account, which is not part of the County, but a special district - they are FLUSH with assets. Advancement is for those socially connected - similar to corporate.

    Advice to Management

Management does not care - BOS is in it to pillage as much as they can and fill their special interests' pockets.

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This was a great place to work 15 plus years ago. A great place to start and finish a career.

    Cons

Benefit package is not comparable to other Bay Area Government Agency's. It has become a great place to start your career, gain the experience needed to succeed elsewhere

    Advice to Management

Take care of those that take care of you

I worked at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Exciting environment and activities, access to variety of animals both domestic and wild. Training and ongoing certifications.

    Cons

Off normal shift hours and days of the week, sometimes difficult citizens and situations are dealt with. Customers can have a lasting impact on a person

    Advice to Management

Know your employees and deal with each one on an individual basis instead of giving a blanket statement that is meant for only one employee

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazing dedicated people work for Contra Costa County!

    Cons

Being a decade+ behind in newer technology and case management systems as well as keeping up with environmental advances (eg; going paperless). Compensation is also the lowest of surrounding counties and rarely/barely keep up with the cost of living in Contra Costa County. The county continues to lose VALUABLE dedicated employees to surrounding counties who seem to value the experience and dedication more than this current Administration.

    Advice to Management

Better compensation to keep up with surrounding counties and at minimum..... a decent living wage consistent with the cost of living in the county especially given the amount of vacancies that aren't being filled. Please bring advances in technology up to date and leave room in the budget for more training in technological advances.

I have been working at Contra Costa County - California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None to think of - all the money is assigned to Public Works. 5 Supervisors and 1 actually doing the work.

    Cons

Too many to list them, it's the most toxic environment you could possibly imagine, why are you staying?? They have you on the hook until you reach 10 years and are fully vested, all this pain and heartache would have been for nothing. After 10 years get the hell away from the nepotism, re-hiring retired Managers so they get double the pay.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the way of the people that want to make a difference.
