My experience at Convergys was pretty good. There is plenty of overtime and commission available. The pay is decent.

    Pros

The best reasons are the pay and the incentives.

    Cons

I would say dealing with irate customers was my biggest challenge.

I worked at Convergys full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Definitely the pay 10.00 an hour plus bonus checks

    Cons

Schedule is never consistent, point system is jack up. If you miss a day of work due to emergency and you bring a legit excuse for example a doctor's note you still get a point. If you miss more than one day and bring a doctor's note they roll it into one point. So not getting a point is impossible even for legit reasons. Management is terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train the coaches better, 3 different coaches will inform you on three different things so you never really know the right way to handle things.

It was not the most enjoyable company to work for.

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative, Combined Billing, Retention Team in Chattanooga, TN

I worked at Convergys full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    -$10/hr base pay starting out
    -Monthly sales commission
-Decent health benefits (eye, dental, and medical)
    -40+ hours a week
    -UTO & PTO

    Cons

    -High turn-over rates
-New hires have two weeks on the floor in sales department before quickly being moved to CRG (retention department) whether they have a choice in the matter.
    -The management is not great.
-Some team leaders on the floor are unreliable as team leaders (never available, etc)
    -Sitting all day in cubicle
-Too many staff to find a free computer before being late trying to get logged into one
-High stress level job at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Be available more to better supervise those under you, because the chosen team leaders could have been chosen more carefully.
-The team meetings are sometimes completely ineffective and just took time away from making more sales, bundles, or "saves" in retention department
-In order to take time off in advance, don't make employees jump through hoops trying to get ahold of floor support, etc. If someone says they can fill in for another employee or trade shifts, the policy is ridiculous. Employees have to fill in for it through work computers 24 hours in advance (Not 23 hours but right at 24) and aren't shown how to prior.
-Alot of the training is unimportant facts trainees never remember about the first satellite, etc, and could be shortened to one week instead of two.

    Pros

Convergys offers great compensation to their employees as well as performance based incentives. Hours can be flexible, based on performance. You can be promoted as soon as a couple months.

    Cons

The nature of the job is customer service. You need to have thick skin and be able to remain professional and courteous to all customers.

    Pros

Your paycheck is based on the effort you put in. The opportunities to make money are endless. Also, the company loves to promote internally, so there are always opportunities to advance if you work hard and express interest.

    Cons

You're on the phone all day, dealing with upset people which can be mentally exhausting at times. Also, there is a constant push to make team goals. Sometimes it seems difficult to deal, but it's just part of the job and can be accomplished easily with effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most managers do an excellent job motivating and assisting agents. For those who don't, just put more of an effort in to finding out why certain agents are not hitting their goals and what can be done to teach them alternative approaches.

Good Pay and Benefits, But Noisy and Ridiculous

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative II in Chattanooga, TN
Former Employee - Customer Service Representative II in Chattanooga, TN

I worked at Convergys full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company has some decent insurance benefits

Monthly (not quarterly) bonuses as well as other incentives for winning prizes or cash.

Depending on the project you work on, free or discounted whatever you're selling (in my case it was Directv)

Clean work environment, pretty sweet break room

Most of the management and supervisors know what they're doing and are helpful.

Overtime is available a lot of the time.

Few options for lunch close by.

    Moe's caters on Wednesdays.

Occasional dinners/lunches for employees on certain events or holidays.

    Cons

The point system for absences/tardies is ridiculous. You're allotted 12 points before you're terminated, which sounds reasonable at first. But if you're 1 minute to 1 hour late, you get a quarter of a point. Missing half of a day is a whole point. Which isn't that bad unless you get overwhelmed the first month and call out a lot due to the stress and overwhelmingness of the call center since they fail to tell you it's a loud environment.

As I mentioned, it's a loud environment, which they fail to tell you before you start on the call floor. Supervisors are running around and yelling for agents to make sells, and it's pretty embarrassing when the clients on the other line can hear that. Especially when you already have an irate individual on the other line.

The food options in the break room are too expensive for too cheap of food.

In addition to the loudness of the supervisors, they insist on blaring music in the call center. Again, like the loudness of the supervisors, it's embarrassing if they ask if I'm working from home or at a club.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rework the point system or throw in some more earn back incentives. Or at least have the crazy loud people calm down a hair. There is no reason for someone to run around the call center yelling at the top of his or her lungs about getting upgrades. Come on, guys, seriously.

I worked at Convergys part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The job was fun at times. Talking to the call in customers and trying to get them what they wanted.

    Cons

Work hours were inconsistent. They would have you come on for and hour, then clock out and go back on in a couple of hours, sometimes for just a short time. Was told that I would get 30 to 36 hours a week. Was only getting 15 to 20 and tying up 6 or 7 days a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want good people to stay with you give them consistent hours.
