I worked at Cook Medical Inc full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Several divisions are growing so there is always a new opportunity. Expanding into developing markets which also provides opportunities to work abroad..

    Cons

Corporate is in a remote location. Cook has a hard time attracting top talent. Salaries are very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People in leadership must be worth following. There are several senior managers that are not fit for their role. Compensation should be revised for several positions, salaries are not competitive with industry peers.

    Pros

Benefits, great co-workers, mostly interesting work.

    Cons

Constant changes in low level employee policies resulting in confusion and information fragmentation (policies have literally flipped in a matter of HOURS on several occasions). Poor communication from upper management on what is expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more consistent with what you expect from your employees, and try to stick with your decisions.

I have been working at Cook Medical Inc

    Pros

Great work/life balance; minimal amount of micromanagement.

    Cons

A lot of incompetent cronies still hang around; compensation is pitiful; vacation time is standard, but considering the salary - not adequate; they rely on antiquated HR policies and are extremely slow to adapt. The unspoken Cook policy is that when you get a promotion, you have to wait nine months to even be looked at for a raise. Managers rarely look out for the people that work for them. Senior managers are so disconnected it's humorous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold yourself accountable. Give people raises in a timely fashion. Let people work from home.

I have been working at Cook Medical Inc full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked here long enough to make life long friends.

    Cons

Wages, good old boy club - must be a member to see any advancement. Not enough paid holidays and no incentives for older employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need someone in charge is that is for our patients and not the bottom line.

I have been working at Cook Medical Inc full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very talented and friendly work colleagues. Broad product line which offers many opportunities for developing unique devices across many different fields. Young and new engineers get opportunities to jump and contribute immediately. Company very sound financially and stability is excellent. Company looks for this to be a life long place of employment. Patient is always put first not performance of company.

    Cons

Very flat organization, with minimal opportunity for serious growth. Poor direction provided at highest levels. Many under performers are left to themselves when they should be retasked or let go. Salary does not compete with larger public device companies. Extremely risk averse to the point of paralysis. Very lean organization that results in excessive burden on certain depts. Since Mr. Cook passed away, no real decision maker. Antiquated systems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve benefits and salary to compete and attract talent from coasts. Provide firm priorities and direction. Review upper management personnel against the same standards middle and lower management are evaluated against. Allow individual units to provide a more team friendly environment. I.e. company picnics
Go back to style that built the company and made it a great place to work.
