Pros
Opportunity to work with many talented people.
Cons
The telecom bubble was tumultuous.
Advice to Senior Management
Know your markets are for real.
Pros
Excellent work-life balance since no responsibility and/or accountability. Enjoy time with friend since no deadline or work pressure
Cons
1. No motivation since compensation is based on nearly flat and everything is based on personal relationship. For example, you had a great year and assume your manager is happy with you at the personal level, you will get a rating of 4 and your raise will be 4% (+/-0.25%). Somebody did not do so well and enjoyed the whole year, he/she will get 3.5%(+/-0.25%).
2. Hard work does not work since most of people do not work so if you work, they all with start politics and you are done.
3. Promotion is rare and hard to come by.
4. No career management and motivation: They loose bright people or make them one of them.
4. False promise and manipulation are at their peak. For example, you have done great, you will get promoted in the very near future, etc statements like these are very frequent to come by. Managers also trick by saying -- see you did great and here you get 300 options. But, please note the strike price will be over $20, which Corning's stock hardly crosses means you get nothing.
5. Everything is political. I was there for few years, but never seen anything got decided by merit, but it was always political.
6. People are struggling for their survival since lay-offs are frequent to come by. God forbid, but if one looses the job meaning simple re-start your career due to two reasons: nobody other than Corning does what they do in the USA and the place is so small that there is nothing in there. In short, move to a new place and change your career -- that's the only option left.
7. Salary and compensation are below average. These days they hire a PhD at 80-85K. Only company, I know, where a PhD and MS join the company in the same band, i.e., B.
8. Spouse has no option but corning and if your spouse would like to work for Corning and they will use it to pay less and/or at lay-off times, you could be in the list.
9. Lay-off list preparation: Again politics. Does not matter how bright, you are, but what matters is how you are with your manager in the personal terms.
10. Diversity is another issue. The company is not accepting any diverse opinion and/or idea since they only want you to change as they want you to. Movers and shakers -- please leave as soon as you can.
11. Small place in upstate NY -- nothing but work, but tax etc is very high.
Advice to Senior Management
Please read my above comments (only and only truth) and bring your Sullivan Park office in order.
Pros
Corning has several divisions, each dealing with very different technologies. If you find the work you're doing to be repetitive, you can switch and start working on completely different projects.
Cons
The location of the HQ isn't great. Corning is a very small town and most people are already in a relationship. Not a great place to be if you're young and single. However, it's an excellent place if you're looking to settle down.
Pros
Corning has continually reinvented itself over the past 160 years and that history of innovation continues today with a strong commitment to investing in new technology and growing primarily through organic means. This focus on growing organically creates lots of opportunities for people to be engaged in very interesting and exciting projects that expand the way that glass and ceramics are used in various applications. The company also invests in people for the long term and although it may take more time than at other companies the best people get great opportunities to grow.
Cons
Some people may be turned off by the conservative culture, somewhat slow decision making, and need to get inputs from lots of stakeholders but if you like a collaborator consensus driven culture then this is actually a positive. The fact that in order to grow your career you must spend time at the HQ in the small town of Corning, NY can also be very hard for people who prefer larg cities.
Advice to Senior Management
The management is doing a nice job. The continued investment and focus on long term value creation in good times and bad really sets the company apart.
Pros
A country with strong heritage and history. Make disciplined smart decisions.
Cons
A bit restricted with information and more on the frugal side with resources/spend.
Advice to Senior Management
Suggest opening up more satellite offices near major metropolitan cities.
Pros
nice people, reasonable compensation, strong presence in the industry
In addition, organized official recruiting processes are satisfactory
I am very proud of having an opportunity to work here at Corning
Cons
location is not good for the people who want to live in the city but various kinds of activities can be provided near this area.
Advice to Senior Management
He did a great job even in the downturn in order to continue business.
Pros
Dedicated colleagues, reasonable compensation and benefits, reasonable work life balance
Cons
Poor career guidance and feedback, nothing new coming out of the pipeline, small town with limited anything, rigid culture to be accepted (Stepford syndrome)
Advice to Senior Management
Find a new location and make the move, it's not the 1950s anymore.
Pros
Very friendly people who care about their people. DO a good job and you will be nocticed and it will make your expirience much more pleasurable.
Cons
Some union workers are whiny some are underqualified and needs assistance of the salaried workforce to hold their hands. I worked a contract position which is a lower wage and no benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
I think the management does a good job they listen to all new ideas and am willing to make some changes. AWESOME
Pros
Chances of relocate around the world is high, senior management have long term strategic vision, high quality of employees, good salary package
Cons
Too much control and detail works from senior leadership, in general a conservative company, too centralized at a single product/ market
Advice to Senior Management
More authorization to working levels
Pros
steady growing fortune 500 company, promising future with Gorilla Glass, good benefit, good training system to promote employee growth.
Cons
Mid-management should know more about technology itself to make sensible decision about fate of each project. Business direction should be based on detailed market evaluation but not on pieces information.
Advice to Senior Management
Mid-level manager, please communicate more with employees about project progression ! use talent resource wisely.
