Corning Anonymous in Glendale, AZ:   (Past Employee - 2007)

Pros

The product line had real promise and the people really did care about the company.

Cons

Management did not want to listen to the real issues, they just wanted the problems to go away.

Advice to Senior Management

Set long term goals and realistic plans and stay with them, let the people how know how to run the business run the business.

Corning Process Engineer:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

It's a great place to work. Innovation based company. Lots of training opportunities. Some plants are union based, but nothing intolerable. Moved to a new position within an year with a hike in salary. Career development is good.

Cons

Somewhat Bureaucratic, but okey. Layoffs since 2008, so I am not sure how it is now. Again union environment is somewhat uncomfortable, because you cannot even hand a frame without a grievance.

Advice to Senior Management

Share the information with your employees and trust them. Focus more on goals and managers have to be more hands on.

Corning Engineering Intern:   (Past Employee - 2007)

Pros

The trust and respect I was given at this position was highly uncommon for an internship. My hard work was appreciated and my accomplishments where broadcast though many levels of management.

Cons

the Corning valley is a small town. although there are the charms, it is also very inconvenient at times. beware.

Advice to Senior Management

there seems to be nothing wrong with how things are managed from the short time I was involved. keep up the good work?

Corning Engineer:   (Current Employee)

Pros

I can not think of any reason other than you need money to eat and sleep. They pay you is the only reason I work there.

Cons

Management has littte concern of your personal life. No mentoring or goal setting. I have never received objectives for my job. Does not reward hard work and gives promotions based on longevity not performance

Advice to Senior Management

Value talent in your organization. Promote those who deserve it and fire underperformers. Find supervisors who can lead and mentor.

Corning Division Vice President in Corning, NY:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The company lives its values. While the company is a global leader in many technical markets in the US, Europe, and Asia, it stills carries the family values and beliefs instituted by decades of family control by the Houghtons. Strong orientation for technological innovation. Consistently manages to place itself at the forefront of many key discoveries. Very good and open communication with all employees. The companies strategic direction, key objectives, and financial performance is widely communicated and understood by all employees. Products reach millions of people globally and have real impact on peoples lives.

Cons

Small company town not for everyone. Company performance very cyclical.

Advice to Senior Management

Continue the practice of open communication to all employees

Corning IT Project Leader in Painted Post, NY:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Strong culture where the corporate values do appear be be worth something. People are respected here. Corning goes a long way to create an inclusive culture. It also attracts a lot of bright minds to R&D. The idea of patient money means that we can wait for research to bear fruit. We don't just chase the profits in the current quarter. The small town community where the HQ is can be a big plus for people because it's safe, housing is affordable, and the schools are pretty good.

Cons

The location of the HQ in upstate NY is isolated. The mall sucks and there aren't as many cool restaurants. High property taxes in NY are also alarming. If you don't have an Ivy League MBA it's hard to get opportunities for certain jobs. Scientists without PhDs also sometimes don't feel listened to. So there is some academic snobbery here.

Advice to Senior Management

Develop our competency in strategic marketing.

Corning Product Manager in Corning, NY:   (Past Employee - 2006)

Pros

Leading edge technology and exciting markets

Cons

Upstate NY locations is a drag.

Advice to Senior Management

Take a little more risk. Company became too risk averse after telecom bust. The risks the company took during telecom boom were not well understood by top management and has left the company in less risk taking mentality.

Corning Senior Process Engineer in Corning, NY:   (Current Employee)

Pros

CI is a very balanced company to work for in both lean and fat times with regard to work-life balance. They are positioned well through market needs and legislative dictate for their existing products, and spends enormous monetary and personnel capital on innovation and growth.

Cons

It is a plus for me, but many of their locations, including the world headquarters and Corning-Valley manufacturing sites, are in more remote locations. So, if a big-city location is your preference, you may not be satisfied. With that said, they invest HEAVILLY in local culture, arts, and education, and are building continuously new infrastructure to improve the local area.

Advice to Senior Management

Continue on course and tack. You are doing fine and making sound decisions to weather the current global economic slowdown.
