    Pros

I have an Awesome manager. The pay is good as long as you know your worth. And this store has great customers .

    Cons

It's hard to get hired full time. no part time benefits. and room to move up is limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The only advice I could give is to maybe offer full time to all department heads, supervisors even if the store is not so good in sales.

I worked at Cost Plus (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers. A fun and always changing environment. Amazing wine and beer selection with very competitive prices that we could use our employee discount with. Starting pay is above minimum which is nice. Awesome supervisors that were always willing to help and work hard.

    Cons

Just like any retail store, there is a fair share of rude customers. I also found it frustrating that Cost Plus really pushes high standards for employees, yet rarely holds anyone accountable when these standards are not met. Little to no room for advancement in the company. The corporate office seems very disconnected from the realities of how business operates at a store level. Very inadequate training procedures for everyone from sales associates to supervisors which generates a lot of unnecessary issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the questions and concerns of your employees. Over the past few years I have noticed a steady decline in company moral which has trickled down to the store level. Customers are noticing this change as well. Cost Plus was a great company to work for when I first started, right before the merger with Bed Bath and Beyond. Please try to find your old roots and build the company back up.

    Pros

Discount is great. Coworkers are great. Don't have to work Thanksgiving.

    Cons

They say that they are all about development. They don't invest the time to do it. I didn't mind doing the legwork, but after jumping through all the hoops- told sorry but you can train the person we hired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't make empty promises.

    Pros

They are really good about working around your schedule if you have two jobs or are a student. They can also give you a set schedule if you need one.

    Cons

Right after the winter holidays end your hours get dropped, but they usually come back by June. Overall it's a pretty good place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is great and they are always there to help you if you need it. They are good at training new employees.

I have been working at Cost Plus full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Very casual environment with nice people. It's fun to see upcoming trends and products. Company celebrates key holidays with company gatherings and good things to be had for cheap during sample and bid sales. Pretty entrepreneurial so when you have a good idea, you can actually execute it without a lot of red tape. Most folks are 9-5 which is good and bad. Fair salaries but benefits are less than ideal.

    Cons

Lack of innovation with products and there are some "legacy" employees that have been around too long (slow to change, not a lot of value added ideas, etc). Some departments are too lax with tardiness, work hours (not working a full 8 hours), and attendance (there are some folks that are sick A LOT) with zero consequences. There are definitely some people who are just "coasting" and trying to look busy. CEO is not around much and when he is, not really "present" (doesn't really bother to talk to people who have not been here at least 5 years). Not a lot of investment in people's development and no real opportunity for growth since your boss probably has been here decades and is not going anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dig deeper into each department so find out if the teams are happy or challenged (most are probably not). Expect more from employees and recognize the ones that are actually contributing vs. playing politics. Insist on new products and innovative promotions (vs comping the same offers each year) - everything looks the same year over year. Make everyone accountable to quantifiable results and everyone should be measured on the same scale vs. some employees getting away with a lot of unacceptable behavior - it's very demoralizing to the rest of the team.

    Pros

Fun store and co-workers. The product is always exciting and the set designs change often keeping you busy. Good place to move up quickly inside the company for business experience. The corporate part tries to keep all positions in the retail involved.

    Cons

I was working when the company was bought out by Bed Bath and Beyond. This changed a lot of the previously great employee benefits like discount and pay. The corporate part tries to keep all positions in the retail involved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people specifically for cashiering so stock and department heads can complete jobs in timely manner. Allows acknowledge a good setup by any employee when changing and stocking new shops.
