    Pros

    Interesting products, usually decent customers.

    Cons

It's retail. All retail is terrible.

    Advice to Management

Management always looks to squeeze as much productivity out of employees at the lowest possible cost. That's an excellent way to burn out good employees.

    Pros

Employee discount was great around the holidays and it's quick to move up the chain of command. Great coworkers.

    Cons

Never scheduled for enough hours to do all the tasks I had to as part of my job, I was working the position for 6 months without being paid the position's raise or added benefits. Wasn't probably trained until 2 months before leaving. Hours often change quickly. Corporate often messes up and it becomes the problem of the store associates. Furniture is cheaply made and the instructions are horrible and customers will complain. My store had a small stock room that made everyone's jobs so much harder. Pay was atrociously low.

    Advice to Management

Get rid time consuming tasks if you're not going to schedule the people required to do them for the appropriate amount of hours. Better pay.

    Pros

Easy to move up, willing to work with your schedule, Gives a decent discount (20%) and it works at bed bath and beyond, can be relaxed at times

    Cons

Never enough employees, always blames employees for miscommunication, managers do not communicate, made stock crew work in a hot warehouse with no AC and when management asked for it to be fixed they were told its not important, management sits in the office and takes a long time to answer any help for employees with customers and the employees gets the wrath.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with each other more, and listen to the employees more since they are the ones on the floor all the time

I worked at Cost Plus part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Besides one or two fellow employees that are fun to work with, There's not much else to say.

    Cons

Poor hours, supervisors act like it's Gossip Girl (this company hires mainly female supervisors), and the turnover rate for Store manager is horrible. Expect to learn how to please everyone to their specific standards as company standards get put on the shelf. Don't expect many hours.

    Advice to Management

Start giving employees enough hours to get their tasks done, and give the department specialists time to maintain their own department and not everyone else's job.

    Pros

Mostly great customers and decent fellow employees. So many fun and interesting items from all over the world. Decent discount on wine, food and household items.

    Cons

Upper management likes to play favorites and pits employees against each other. What they say is corp culture changes daily. They don't like to fire employees because it show high turn over. They just cut hrs or sch you hours your not available forcing people to seek other employment, Very clickish.

    Advice to Management

If you are following company policy, follow it all not just what you feel like. Reward good employees who work, cover shifts and are dedicated to company. Pay fare wage

    Pros

Pay was somewhat competitive for being retail. The co-workers made the job bearable.

    Cons

Management on a district level was laughable. Training for upper management was almost non-existent.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to properly train the people you bring in, otherwise you will lose them to the competitors.

I worked at Cost Plus part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There was good employee discounts, friendly employees.

    Cons

Not the best quality merchandise, as far as expecting it to last long. Started out at a new store so had to set up from ground up. Not very organized from upper management. When you are new, you don't know any company standards, and they just expected you to figure out where and what to do on your own. Not enough direction or follow up.

I have been working at Cost Plus full-time

    Pros

Great company with great people. They truly listen to their employees and value feedback. They are constantly looking for ways to improve and admit at times if they need to real things back in. Career advancement within the organization is attainable.

    Cons

Like all retail, hours can be long sometimes to get a lot of things done with limited resources.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing forward and adapting to change. Listen to employees for new ideas and ways to improve processes and customer interaction in stores.

I worked at Cost Plus (Less than a year)

    Pros

Getting to look at all of the new items when they come in. And the discount made it a little bit worth it.

    Cons

Unfair hours and expectations. Management was horrible, and the supervisors were even worse. Very unprofessional work environment (pointing finger at the sexist creep of a supervisor) and impossible to move up. Don't expect this job to be a large source of income; you'll never get more than 25 hours a week.

    Advice to Management

    Just stop.

I worked at Cost Plus full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Creative innovation is encouraged. Location is easy to find. Company supports health of employees with health events. Pay is competitive with other retailers.

    Cons

Location in Oakland is not the safest area. Limited lunch options in the immediate area, though there are some options. Home office interior feels like a warehouse in places.

    Advice to Management

Keep encouraging creative innovation. Update the interior of the home office or move locations to a modern building. Keep supporting employees with health fairs and team building activities.
