  1. Good technology, great people, good compensation, debates that never end

I have been working at CounterPath Corporation

    Pros

Cutting edge technology, everybody can participate in business planning. Very good compensation and benefits package for a start up.

    Cons

Lack of structure -- both your time and the company as a whole. A little too corporate for a small company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Referee internal debates -- listen, then choose a course and insist everybody follow that course. Too often people with good ideas that are nevertheless in opposition (or at least not coordinated) are allowed to pursue the separate courses to the detriment of the company. This is a leadership issue.

I have been working at CounterPath Corporation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

CounterPath is an award winning technology innovator and market leader in the VoIP client, Unified Communications and FMC space. CounterPath is headquartered in Vancouver, BC and has offices in Chicago, IL, Ottawa, ON, and Boston, MA.

CounterPath's corporate structure and internal communication is open enough that everyone in the company can bring forward new ideas and make substantive change that improve the way things are done, the culture, and the design and execution of products.

CounterPath is very focused on it's customers and to some degree lets customer and market demand drive parts of the development roadmap. CounterPath has continued its investment in products by adding mobile and tablet clients on to its traditional desktop clients. CounterPath is also now offering managed services and server products that complement and enhance the value of the core client products. These new services and servers vastly differentiate CounterPath from the other players in the market as CounterPath is solving problems the other entrants do not yet understand exist.

CounterPath is not the low cost provider and does not work to be. The focus is on providing high quality, high functionality, best of class solutions for customers. Employees are proud of their work effort instead of working to meet unrealistic deadlines and delivering sub par software.

    Cons

With many customers, large projects, high goals for quality and big work efforts the company sometimes needs to juggle priorities to meet market requirements and customer commitments. This juggling happen at 'later than ideal' times inside a particular project and this can lead to starting and stopping of individual efforts. While not great, this does help the company deliver on it's highest priorities and meet the larger goal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue investment in building the right technical team as the company grows.

Continue focus on solutions that build value and solve operational challenges for customers.

    Continue the focus on quality.

I have been working at CounterPath Corporation full-time

    Pros

Great work-life balance. Excellent benefits. Work is reasonably interesting.

    Cons

Highly political environment. Top heavy staff structure where it seems in a 100 person company there are too many directors and not enough actual hands. No one owns up to projects and drives things. As a lower level employee, we regularly talk behind management's backs wondering what various people actually do to earn their titles. Very clear inner circle in management with a frat boy mentality.

Public filings used to list our CEO, CFO, and VP salaries. However for the past couple years all VPs have been removed and just CEO and CFO are listed which seems shady.

Zero opportunity for growth. Again with the top heavy structure, the only way to move is take the boss' job. How likely is that to happen when they are busy fighting for position.

Sales is a joke. I regularly don't learn sales team members names because more than likely they'll be gone in a couple quarters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some serious direction is needed. Need more managing down than managing up.

    Pros

Great technology. Overall, good communication between teams. Best SIP/XMPP client available. Tonnes of well known large customers. Great opportunity for career growth.

    Cons

Growing pains. Sometimes people do not effectively communicate across departments leaving feedback unanswered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help individuals to grow their skill sets with and have more autonomy making everyone more accountable. Promote more company wide communication with additional town hall meetings and leverage the internal Intranet.

    Pros

Great technology, people and products. Amazing office, health benefits and retirement plan.

    Cons

There are a handful of people with negative attitudes that poison the waters. It has a negative impact on the people that want the company to succeed. For a tech company that is 10 years old there is always some history. For this small group of people - Focus on the future, be positive and people will be inspired to follow.

I have been working at CounterPath Corporation full-time

    Pros

    - employees are great
    - lots of freedom (due to management having no focus)

    Cons

    - too many senior management (especially when the decisions reside with two people)
    - no growth plan or corporate strategy
    - chasing revenue each quarter removes ability to invest in people, tech
    - Think about glen gary, glen ross and you will know what it's like to work there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - CEO should step
    - go private
    - invest in R&D not operating expenses

I have been working at CounterPath Corporation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Flexibility.
Can speak up own mind. Can literally change the world (by pushing the VoIP frontiers).

    Cons

Management disorganized; It cannot focus of few the most important goals.
Values: this company should more focus on our end customers needs than "well-being" of all employees (some should be let go).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to please everyone around and pick your battles (and make it happen).
Stop thinking what the company can do for you (you know the rest)...

    Pros

    - relaxed environment
    - your input does really make a difference
    - good benefits

    Cons

    - pay is low (this has many people in the company thinking about leaving)
    - poor work/life balance (many long nights)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay higher and give better hours for your employees, these are the only complaints I have about the company, if it wasn't for these two aspects I would never consider leaving, right now much like many employees I am beginning to look elsewhere.
