It is very stressful. You can't help but take your work home with you.

I have been working at County of Chester full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have made some very loyal friends.

    Cons

The overall stress of the job and the work environment adds to that. One doesn't really get the sense of caring by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Be more approachable and personable.

I worked at County of Chester full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent. A lot of holidays off. That's about it. If you keep quiet and agree with everything you will do fine.

    Cons

The other poster was correct. The Human Services Department has become a micro-managed eggshell-walking nightmare. Raises have just about become distinct, unlike some of the Dinosaurs that still manage around here. Morale is extremely low, and why not? Most of the Employees only hear the negatives. There is nothing positive about your job. There are still some good people working here, unfortunately, you need to conform to being a yes-person, almost robotic in order to survive. Watch your back. Many will smile one day....and stab you the next.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the employees with respect and not like 4 year old children. Stop the double-standards. Stop the hypocrisy. Stop talking out of your tail end. People can smell the baloney a mile away. Stop dealing it and begin engaging people. Can you talk TO the employees and not AT them? For all the meetings, for all the management training, management sure lacks true leaders as of 2014. There may be a few, but not nearly enough.

I worked at County of Chester part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Out of the office everyday, Early hours, good amount of holidays, Learned what I do not want in a future employer

    Cons

Lack of leadership in the management, low pay, unrealistic expectations, no employee support, outdated benefits, unaddressed harassment on the job. Unwilling to be creative to reach our department goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house and get people with a larger view of the world and the county into management. Get a working HR department that doesn't side with the person who has been their the longest but rather who has a viable issue. Develop and maintain a communication plan.

I have been working at County of Chester

    Pros

Benefits are great, hours are good.

    Cons

Management process of choosing, not so great. Democracy put into place

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose wisely...do more background and more testing. It's not the years put in, you need to advise from new, fresh learned educated learned knowledge. "The old, do not like change" Change is great!

  6. Loyalty means nothing

I worked at County of Chester full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and a modestly good salary. Most holidays off, unless your are in a 24/7 department.

    Cons

Long-term employee means nothing to the management and HR. HR is primarily looking out for the County's interests and not the employee. Management is more of a 'good ole boy' club/network than real managers. Educated and experience mean nothing as the managers only look and the money. As another reviewer posted, the County sees you as a number who can be replaced by someone else if you cross them. It's either tow the line and conform or watch your back. Once you speak up you'll have a target on your back from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about some true respect for employees. Have managers who actually know about managing people. Maybe listen to employees more than the a minute compliant from someone.

I have been working at County of Chester full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are not any pros for working for this piece of crap county!! I am in the process of getting out of this hell hole!

    Cons

They don't know how to treat their employees. In the past 5 years they stopped giving raises and bonuses. And then bragged publicly how well they are doing financially. Very low morale working here. They haven't replaced employees who have retired or quit leaving more work for current employees and not compensating them. They have no respect or appreciation for their loyal employees!! I don't recommend working here at all!!!!!

I have been working at County of Chester full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Reliable job that you know will always be there. Never a dull day if your working on the law enforcement side.

    Cons

Your a number and easily replaceable. Raises are hit or miss with the economy. Unless your a rising star your career here will flatline after a few years. Spend no more then 5 years in the same position or you will begin to vegetate and get in a rut.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay out of the way of the individual who has ideas, vision and sees the possibilities. Don't take another's ideas while blocking them to repackage them six months down the road as your ideas!

I have been working at County of Chester full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

At least has half decent benefits.

    Cons

Employees of the Human Service Departments are micro-managed to the fullest extent. Innovation and suggestions for improvement are not welcomed. The Human Service Departments are basically micromanaged by two individuals. Keep your mouth shut and put up with whatever comes your way you want to remain. People are constantly being fired for very little. They do not care about retention of employees or whether or not the work is satisfying for the employees. Recent budget cuts have made most jobs almost unbearable! Morale could not be worse than it is at present. Not a good place to work at right now!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe listen to the employees. Meet with them and actually listen to any suggestions. Make it appear as though you care about the employees and that you want to keep them.

I have been working at County of Chester

    Pros

The residents and their families are great.

    Cons

Very top heavy. It is a county owned and operated facility, so $$ is thrown about willy-nilly when it comes to management level people. Short-handed on the floor, laundry, kitchen, etc.
