Pros
Everyone at the office was very congenial and willing to help one another. Also very good at getting work done in the county mandated 4 day work week.
Cons
4 day work week negatively effected hourly workers...but at least they got to keep their jobs in this economy.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue fostering a good community atmosphere among the various groups and assignments within the office. Keep it a nice place to work
Pros
Good benefits , good life work balance, depends on Department where you work.
Cons
County unsure of budgets. Lesser chance to move up.
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Salary and benefts are excellent
Cons
Budget problems, that is why I got laid off. They seem don't want me to come back. I am disabled.
Advice to Senior Management
Re-hire former County employees, and do not forget the disabled former employees!!
Pros
Respect from inside and outside of the orginization. You can have a life outside of your job.
Cons
Budget issues can slow growth both by promotion and raises.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep the best intrist of the orginization in mind when dealing with county leadership.
Pros
Pay,benefits,Well diversified work force, room for growth, and reasonable starting wages.
Retirement plans range from excellent to good depending on classification.
Cons
Inept managers, waste of resources and assets, small voice on complaints.Does not always walk the talk, and horrible in staying with court rulings, to the point of defying them, and getting the reputation for being that type of county, with bad top HR people.
Advice to Senior Management
Walk the talk, listen and act to what your work force has been telling you along, somethings did not work in the past and sure will not work now in this current economic environment,do not repeat failure, it waste everybody's money.
Pros
Benefits and that is it
Cons
No pay raises and furloughs
Pros
Benefits package, Holiday pay/leave hours
Cons
Bureaucracy, Sketchy hiring, promotion practices in some departments
Advice to Senior Management
??
Pros
Stable due to union membership, decent salary and pension cant be beat. Benefits package is as good as they come, the pension in particular.
Cons
No room for advancement, promotion, or career growth. Favorites game is played, emphasis on butt-in-seat rather than talent or skill. Management makes decisions for no good reason other than "that is how we do things" even if its inefficient.
Advice to Senior Management
Step outside of what has been done, it is obviously not working. Learn the value of your current employees, and play to their strengths, help them to strengthen their weaknesses and offer some incentives on staying productive, ambitious and helpful. Promote from within, whenever possible. All jobs should be filled first with qualified (and not false, meaningless qualifications, but real qualifications) individuals. Only then should you look outside of the agency.
Pros
A lot of opportunities for success for those who enjoy the politically complex environment of local government
Cons
A tremendous amount of self-interest exists in the executive and senior management
Advice to Senior Management
Do the right thing. No one should ever get rich in public service
Pros
Excellent benefit/compensation structure for members of management. Compressed workweek 9/80s apply to most positions, job security is better than private sector, though not always. Pension system is still beyond compare and likely to be around for many-years-off retirees.
Cons
Technical advances are much slower. It's 2008 and telecommuting is not looked upon favorably. Entry level jobs can be hard to advance from without education.
Advice to Senior Management
Be accessible to staff. The CEO should speak to employees, not just the public.
