    Pros

There are 17,000 County employees--about half of whom work in Health and Hospital Services (HHS). IT supports 35+ different business units from public safety and justice, planning and development, health services, etc. Cloud services, mobile app development, electronic health records, implemented while being mindful of government regulations. If you want an IT job with variety and challenges and are committed to public service, there are many opportunities. IT organizational transformation is underway to increase efficiency and align IT services Countywide with business needs. The salary is fine, not great, and the health benefits are excellent. Also, if you have many years of experience you will find there is not age discrimination--your experience is valued.

    Cons

If you can complete the rigorous application and hiring process, you will have made it through the most frustrating part. After you are hired, if you work hard, are willing to work collaboratively, keep learning and share knowledge with others, you will find very little negative in IT services.

    Advice to Management

Emphasize team performance for managers' performance reviews. Managers/executives across the departments need to collaborate more, and should be reflected in their reviews.

    Pros

    Good benefits, assisting community,

    Cons

Poor employee morale. The work we do can feel like you're working as part of an assembly line. Executive management out of touch with employees. Unrealistic expectations of office and unit case loads. Unit based case loads reward poor employees while increasing workload of high performing employees.

    Advice to Management

Please retire. Business process varies from office to office. Workflow can be very inefficient. Certain newly created units are redundant (AB720) and would be better utilized at existing offices.

    Pros

Set questions, not difficult. I was happy to not have to answer "Why do you want to work here?".

    Cons

Panel interview, second interview is also a panel. Lengthy process. Applied in September, took test in October, received e-mail in December that my name was forwarded to department "A" and for me to call to schedule an appointment. Interviewed in January, second interview in March, offered position in April.

    Pros

Stable job once you get in the door and pass the tests, as long as you don't make any mistakes.

    Cons

Training program is not standardized and there is little support for people who need it. Feedback is non specific and the higher management is absent.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people, even those that are going through the program, better. They are there to help people, not be kicked in the throat.
