    There is never a training budget to keep skills current due to being a public sector. Culture changed a few years ago to a more contentious environment.

    Excellent clinical experience working with severely mentally ill population, in a multi-disciplinary team.

    Cons

    Top-down management structure that are primarily driven by the latest crisis or political pet project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    If you do not involve your staff in decisions, the result is poor morale and ultimately the clients suffer. Senior management should be more visible at the clinics to understand the stressors of the front-line staff

    Pros

    The only thing that I can say as a positive is the benefits. People need to understand that most government jobs are low pay but have a good retirement and the County of Ventura is no exception.

    Cons

    Politics and bullying. The County of Ventura has been in the local paper for a culture of bullying. After working two departments and seeing the same behavior in both, I would caution anyone who wants to work there to be aware of it. In addition, the county is a SEIU shop but any union benefits kick in after 1 year. Incidentally, one year is how long your probation is which is unusual in any job that I have had. Also, promotion is limited.

    Really do something about the culture of bullying and consider a 6 month probation and not a year probation.

    For the most part the people are great, hardworking with the best interest at heart to do good work for the clients served.

    Endless meetings with very little productivity overall. Often loses sight of who they serve.

    Listen to your employees, they really are smart people. Set up a structured, effective and confidential feedback process and take action on some very good ideas. Stop making decisions in a closet.

    good program, nice offices/grounds, nice wellness perks for employees

    Cons

    Very rigid structure, if you show willingness to help solve an issue affecting you which is not based in your department it becomes very bureaucratic and hierarchical; Extremely low pay until you have at least 10 years invested; vacation package worse than some private industry

    Pros

    Overtime is optional and generally frowned upon. The benefits are good and the pay is OK. If you excel then you will eventually grow professionally and personally.

    Cons

    Job growth is somewhat slow due to nobody ever leaving and the inability to open new positions. Dead weight is all around due to the union preventing layoffs of inefficient workers. Senior management does not effectively communicate down or up, causing a negative view throughout the county and with it's own employees. Very little efforts are put forth to centralize IT across the county, resulting in a lose standards, and competiion with other county agencies.

    Effective communication and sharing strategic initiatives in a more meaningful way would help. Ensure the viability of IT Services through centralization across the County.
