    Dysfunctional Sales; High Turnover

    I have been working at Coupa Software Inc

    Pros

    - Great product and marketing/sales story.
    - Bringing innovation to an industry that sorely needs it.
    - Building momentum in the global market.

    Cons

    - If you interview at Coupa, realize that if you are hired, you will most likely need or want to find a new job within 1.5 years and you will most likely not make quota.
    - Massive turnover on sales team. The amount of high quality sales talent that has left is staggering.
    - Constant reassignment of accounts, territories and opportunities.
    - It's hard to make quota. Very few sales reps make quota but they keep hiring more sales people.
    - Most sales reps don't last more than 1.5 years. They are either fired or decide to leave when they experience the culture, reassignments, lack of support and realize it's very difficult to make quota and make decent money year over year.
    - Arrogant leadership.
    - Most field sales reps don't feel supported by either their manager or corporate office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Admit you have a problem with sales turnover. Coupa is dominating this market but just imagine where the company would be if the sales culture was not so dysfunctional.
    - Invest in supporting current customers. There are a lot of unhappy customers.
    - True sales leadership is more than cheerleading on Monday training calls.

    Pros

    Great basic and commission structure
    Forrester & Gartner backed as leader in the market
    Very simple concept to position in the early stages of communication with prospects
    Remote working, ideal for work/life balance
    CRM has plenty of data to work with

    Cons

    Personally, I found the team very antagonistic with far too much focus on internal politics and social relationships rather than productivity and success.

    Beware of ever-growing discrimination and losing focus on the core values of Coupa.

    Pros

    ^ Great work/life balance (unless you're a slacker!)
    ^ Healthy culture right from the top (or rather, from the bottom since we have an inverted org chart)
    ^ Company values are clearly defined and you know what you're working towards
    ^ Location convenient to major freeways

    Cons

    ^ Salary / benefits are structured as if it's a big company - this makes it hard to attract talent.
    ^ Lately, there's been a fair amount of hiring external senior / management individuals instead of promoting within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't lose the charm of a small company. Reward employees who have been loyal. Promote from within instead of hiring from outside. Start recognizing and celebrating employees outside of sales.

    I worked at Coupa Software Inc (more than an year)

    Pros

    IPO is probable. Rev and employee growth.

    Cons

    Awful sales culture, bad management, impossible quota.
    Priorities are all wrong - image is everything. Reviews here more important than fixing what is wrong. Sales reps last no more than 12 months, constant turnover.

    Be sure to interview THEM hard if looking at Coupa, it's not all roses.Far far from it.

    Great culture for those who want to take ownership of their job. Strong focus on getting things done, without the corporate bureaucracy. Management understands that work/life balance is important.

    Cons

    None that I can think of.

    Pros

    The company has incredible momentum and energy. Everyone here seems to really enjoy working here, works hard, and it is a fun culture. Companies that include personal success and customer success as a core value of the company are few and far between and Coupa lives that value system.

    The company also moves very quickly. Come in with ideas and be ready to execute. But opportunity abounds.

    Cons

    Would love a few more employee perks like lunches, healthy snacks, standup desks and some things that some other less interesting companies have but that is nitpicking.

    Pros

    This is a fantastic company and Coupa is only getting started. The "Savings-as-a-Service" market is Coupa's to win.

    The reasons I joined the company are simple:

    1. The CEO is an extremely passionate, driven and is laser focused on customers and their success! Our CEO is down to earth and leads the company on the premise of three "core" values - customer success, results and excellence. Many leaders talk about values, but he actually practices them day-to-day.

    2. The people I work with are extremely smart and are all rowing in the same direction. We also have a lot of fun.

    3. I have an interesting and challenging role and I clearly understand how my success contributes to the success of the organization and company overall. How many employees can say that?

    4. I am proud to be part of a company where we provide real value for our customers - 450+ and growing each day.

    5. My immediate manager. We hit it off during the interview process through mutual respect. He understands what I can do for Coupa and I believe, is committed to my long term success.

    Cons

    There's nothing material - it's all good!

    Keep hiring great talent and don't let Coupa's rapid growth change the company or it's values.

    Nothing that any other high growth Silicon Valley company is experiencing.
