Three Pillars: Arrogance, Humiliation, Lack of Sales Leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt is very hard, I guess it is just a good product in a very interesting space. The technology is very solid and a very easy to use platform, but that is a given in today's Cloud enterprise software. The product team and the engineers are the only valid and truly human asset in this company, take care of them Mr. VC's.

ConsGlobal Accounts leadership it's all about humiliation and not contribution to the sales cycle. During forecast calls they only care about where are you having challenges, and instead of providing coaching, ideas and suggestion to move the deal forward they just care about humiliate people in front of everyone else, this is how this "leader" operates, no cooperation, closing suggestions just purely lack of respect of what people do as professionals. The pay is way bellow average in the Subscription based model, you have to be at 150% of quota in order to really start making money, and by the time you get there you are feel so frustrated with the way you are being threated that it's better just to leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice is to the VC's. They have a very smart CEO, but perhaps Rob is just a product and visionary guy, he can inspire the engineers and the product team but not the sales soldiers so evaluate his role in the company. Change the entire sales "leaders" they don't inspire. you have a great opportunity to take market away from traditional vendors, but you need true leaders. It's not late yet.

Miserable Employees, Bad Management, Excessive Hype and Super-High Turnover

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsCoupa's products are ok. Other than that, there isn't much of anything good about working at Coupa.

WARNING: Regarding Fake Positive Reviews of Coupa: Management at Coupa is pressuring and directing (i.e. forcing) employees to write positive reviews on Glassdoor. This is against Glassdoor policy, constitutes spamming, and shows dishonest business practices.

Also, Coupa is doing the same thing by pressuring employees to say good things in various Best Place To Work surveys. This is wrong, and Coupa should be tossed out of the results for doing this.

    ConsHere are the main negatives:

    1. Oligarchic, nepotistic management team. Starting with the CEO, this is a group that could care less what any employee thinks. Yet, they spout a bunch hype that Coupa is an inverted pyramid where employees are the real decision makers. Don't you believe it! To the contrary, employees who voice any concerns are promptly fired.

    2. Compensation is way below industry norms.

    3. Coupa attempts to sell new employees on a rosy financial future by getting a measly few thousand non vested options to make up the for low pay. This is nothing but funny money with no value. In order to fully vest, you would have to be here at least 4 years and remember, if the company is acquired your options are void. Your chances of not surviving 4 years, or the company being acquired are very, very high. You lose either way. Sound like a stacked deck here?

    4. Culture at Coupa is unhappy, with everyone feeling like they have to work 7 days a week. No work/life balance at all.

    5. As Coupa is owned and controlled by the venture capital firm stakeholders, there is very little transparency into direction or the future. Coupa could easily be sold off to a larger software company, with the resultant layoffs of Coupa employees....especially those most recently hired!

    7. Coupa is constantly trying to take advantage of every conceivable means to get their name in the news anywhere they can. All over LinkedIn, online blogs, magazines etc. It is so overdone as to be smarmy, annoying and creates an image of desperation.

    8. Finally, as has been said in other reviews, the sales organization is perhaps the worst anywhere, ever. It is really not something you want to do to yourself. Sales management is not trustworthy, is full of extreme micromanagement, meddles in deals and tries to take credit away from reps....and worst of all is trying constantly to pay reps less commission.

Yet Coupa touts its 21% commissions....which are totally phony. In order to get there you have to be over 150% of plan, or close to that. Very, very few reps even come close to quota. Top performers at Coupa barely make quota, and then they change the comp plan and move the bar higher. Don't be fooled or taken in by this. Most newly hired Coupa reps do not survive even their first few months. The turnover is more than 200% on an annualized basis.

And the worst part of all for a SaaS company is Coupa reps get zero commissions on years 2 and 3 on multiyear contracts. Unlike other SaaS or cloud companies which pay reps years 1, 2, and 3.....Coupa ONLY pays on year 1. Many SaaS deals are spread over several years....so again, with Coupa, you lose.

SUMMARY: I don't recommend working here for all of these and many more reasons. There is no shame in collecting a paycheck, so if this is all you can get, then that would be the only reason.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is no point in giving current management any advice as they won't listen. They will pretend to listen, but nothing is going to work except regime change in this situation. Perhaps the VC's will show them the door, but that is not really all that likely.

Lots Of Hype, Arrogance, Low Pay and High Turnover

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSomeone else posted exactly what needs to be said. A May 2014 review nailed what the Sales culture is like, scroll down for a realistic view into selling at Coupa. Coupa is a great offering but a very hard sell.

ConsUNATTAINABLE GOALS FOR SALES. NO ONE MAKES QUOTA OR EVEN NEAR IT. 3 reps made 100% in 2013. Just three in a WW Sales Org.

Also true in the other review, you are expected to accept low pay "for the cause." If you work to earn a living Coupa may not be for you.

Negative reviews on this site are spoken of in meetings. Watch any bad review, it's followed by a few positive reviews. This is orchestrated.

Advice to Sales candidates - ask about goals, quota, turnover, length of sales cycle, SC support, and who on the team "the one to watch" for how to sell at Coupa. Chances are, none, because no one is "killing it" at Coupa. All are scratching their heads asking how the H do we sell this stuff?

Advice to Senior ManagementLower pricing? Lower quota? Value your employees rather than telling them "to take a hike if they are not on-board" every company meeting.

Coupa Software is competing in tough market with big competitors like Net Suite.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCoupa is ERP Cloud Software with strong marketing and sales department. Youth driven excitement. Software as a service is a growing segment.

ConsManagement needs to train supervisors. Each office is a separate island. Shift work can wear you out. Graveyard and then day shift regiment is tough.

Advice to Senior ManagementProduct management and operations need to work better together. Sales first does not always fix technical operational problems. Reward productive technical and operations people as you do the sales people.

Lots Of Hype, Arrogance, Low Pay, Poor Management, and Very High Turnover

    (Former Employee)

ProsNot many pros. Coupa is a cloud company and has reasonably good products. If you work there, you get a paycheck, which is something everyone needs (and you can get at any company!). You also get to put cloud on your resume, which is good if you are trying to get into the cloud and/or startup, VC-funded companies. Also, there are some very smart people at Coupa, and this is an obvious benefit.

ConsSales management is terrible and getting worse, and obviously does not care about anyone or anything but more numbers, more numbers. Very high pressure. Worse is that sales management adds no value to sales cycle. More like dead weight. All they really do is criticize sales people, even senior sales people who have a ton of experience and success. Almost never a good word or compliment. Demeaning to watch.

Also, the reality is that at Coupa, sales reps are treated like a lower class of employee, are not valued and not respected. Coupa is run by the product management team and the services team, and sale reps are reduced to a functionary role. It is a very bad sales culture.

HR as an organization is very rude and abrasive to employees....like the military police giving orders. Many people are uncomfortable speaking with HR or going to HR with any questions or concerns.

Management by fear is the standard at Coupa throughout....Coupa likes to brag about "pruning" people. Does that sound like a culture you want to work in?

For a company with only around 220 employees, there is a lot of big-ego type people and politics already, along with lots of annoying process.

Low pay. They push you to take a reduced salary from where you came from by hyping the small stock option grant you receive. But these options are unvested and take 4 years to vest! If Coupa gets bought out, you get nothing if your options are not vested. And it is likely one of the large software companies will buy Coupa and add to their portfolio of products.

Comp plan makes it almost impossible to get into the higher bonus range, or even hit your number.

Constant, "always on" mentality is draining and destructive. Supposed unlimited vacation policy just means if you leave you will not get a dime for your accrued vacation.

Coupa is full of hype, with a kind of enforced cheerleader mentality. Actually kind of a cult-like persona. They constantly pressure employees to repost (spam) all social media with posts to raise the Coupa brand. It is very manipulative.

Don't believe the "Best Place To Work" award nonsense.....this was done by pressuring all employees over and over and over to send in a positive survey response.

Career advancement: forget it. Few get promoted. All senior leadership roles are filled from the outside.

Turnover is incredibly high. Coupa is a revolving door and every more people are departing, whether resigning or being "pruned". (How nice.)

If you need a job to get "cloud" on your resume maybe this is the chance to do it. But beware, you are not going to like it for long, and you will not be likely to stay long so you will end up with a short job tenure on your resume.

Bottom line: sorry to say, but this is a terrible place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementFire the entire sales management team and start from scratch. That goes for the HR too.....and all the big ego types. But, the problem is....it is senior management that hired these people, so you know what that means.

Knock off the hype and just deliver real value.

Fast pace environment, place to work if you want to make a difference

Solution Consultant (Current Employee) San Mateo, CA

ProsPlenty of opportunity to be creative and contribute to the community and participate in the success of the company. Unlimited vacation is nice, but most people that work here find it hard to take it, not because we can't, but because we like doing what we do and find it hard to pull a way.

ConsAddictive culture that pulls you in, could be good or bad, but for those that look for a 9 to 5, this is not it. Overtime is common but mostly by choice not force or expectation.

    Great place to work

Customer Care Engineer (Current Employee) Reno, NV

ProsOne of the things about this company that stand out (to me) is the people. I have never been a part of a company where we worked so cohesively as a team. Not that there aren't issues but whatever comes up tends to be dealt with right away or so minor as to not even be an issue.

ConsThe move from being a small company to a large one causes some chaos.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing.

Headed in a good direction, "Best Employer" Overstated

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWorking in any field at Coupa involves a fast-paced environment and touching multiple teams. The company's momentum can be both felt and seen around you.

ConsLow-end of market on salaries, some departments lack great management, growing pains as we continue to expand and bring on new members.

Advice to Senior ManagementI've seen good talent come and leave, while others stay. Learn to keep them while we scale to achieve Coupa's true potential.
