Hold people accountable so you can keep employees.

I have been working at Covance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of overtime, work with animals, good benefits, including health, eyes, and dentist. Good 401k matching program

    Cons

Way too much working. Get ready to have two weekends off per month. Way too much focus on what you're doing wrong, with little to no recognition on what you're doing right. And the management staff has little to no idea what you're doing in lab, which means they have little to no ability to support you if problems arise. It's pretty much, "you figure it out, but God help you if you do it wrong."

    Advice to Management

Gotta be aware of what's happening in lab, not just spending five hours a day screwing up tomorrow's schedule. And try to recognize that your overworked employees are trying their best, so maybe cut some slack on mistakes.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed my time at Covance because of my co-workers. The benefits are excellent. You start out with 21 days of PTO. 6% 401K match.

    Cons

Down side of excellent benefits is lower pay, much lower than its competitors. It's also very difficult to have a 40 hours work week there. Too many changes in the leadership team, which cause discontinuity.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees' needs before making major decisions. Although you have the right to choose who gets to work under you, you should also consider if the person is being perceived by his/her peers.

    Pros

    - Good benefits - Lots of variety, lots to learn - Fast paced work (if you enjoy that)

    Cons

    - Micromanagement - lack of trust in staff - Awkward scheduling sometimes, not very flexible - Rotating overnight, weekend, 12 hour shifts - Limited room for advancement

    Advice to Management

Trust your staff and have higher expectations of them. Treat staff like adults, don't play favorites.
