Pros
If you can fog a mirror, you'll probably not get fired.
Generally people are treated well but the work load is often unfairly distributed.
Cons
You work with a lot of employees that can fog a mirror.
If you perform your job very well management rewards you by freezing you in that position.
Communication is terrible.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop having surveys about how things are going and enforce management to communicate with team members. My management team goes months without any communication with their staff.
Pros
Excellent people to work with. No micromanaging, no nonsense. As long as you get the work done in a good and timely manner, the bosses are happy.
Cons
Teams are spread out all over the place, and it makes it a little difficult, especially when one person is east coast and your PM is in west coast.
Advice to Senior Management
Management is excellent. I can speak for my manager, and he's supported me in all my goals and career advancements.
Pros
The bar is very low. It does not take much to satisfy requirements. You can be a star with little effort
Cons
Lots of people who have been in the organization for a long time. For many, the only job they might have had. Not at all progressive.
Advice to Senior Management
Wake up and smell the 21st century
Pros
Pay is very good, benefits are at par with other companies
Cons
Top-down management approach; micro-management
Manage by intimidation
Old style leaders - not at all progressive
Younger employees will struggle
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership Coaching - take is seriously
Trust your people & delegate beyond Sr VP
Pros
Great co-workers, at least on my immediate team. Good localized management and plenty of work to do. Minimal if any travel required.
Cons
No sense of ownership or urgency. Effectively no documentation or shared knowledge of IT services or infrastructure. Effectively no leadership in the trenches. "Get it done!" mentality with no support from Sr Leadership team to drive the required changes. Committments / decisions to move forward on "projects" are typically 2+ years old and were made by people that have already left the company. No re-evaluation of the decision is made, no budgets are defined and no initial plan is developed.
Advice to Senior Management
Make yourself available to the Project Management organization(s). Listen and learn from their first-hand knowledge and experience. Open your eyes to the fact that your current IT organization (VP down) is not being completely honest with you. You are one step away from an IT catastrophe...
Pros
Lots of hours and weekend work too
Cons
No flex time for the hours you work over.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen really Listen
Pros
Have a job. Ok benefits.
Coworkers.
Cons
Management would be the biggest downside, incompetent, the only communication skills they have been taught is to talk down to the employees. Communication is awful.
No work/life balance.
Company converted systems because they were too cheap to pay to keep the current one. Employees have had mandatory OT since Oct '08, the money from the overtime is nice but the company doesn't allow more then 4 people per day to be off for the entire department. Many employees are unable to even get days off to do thing such as go to doctors appointments, care for sick children etc. IF you do take a day off it is counted against you and you will be reprimanded for it.
Upper management could care less about it's employees, worse since Wise took over. They have no idea of what changing systems has done or how it is run so are constantly harassing lower managers on why productivity is not higher, which in turn makes for a very stressful work environment.
Coventry is the American sweatshop.
Advice to Senior Management
If you want to know why productivity is low and customers are mad, why don't come do the job so you'll have some idea of what you are talking/complaining about.
Look up the definition of work/life balance.
All of the managers should be fired.
