I learned a lot about doing business, and I a lot about not being valued as an asset to the company.

Operations (Former Employee)
San Diego, CA

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFast-paced, learn a lot of roles, good benefits.

ConsOften break-neck-paced, learn a lot of roles because they run too lean and a few have to do the work of what would take many, not appreciated by management

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your human assets and look at what is good for the company versus what is good for your career and wallets.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Average Covidien 2014

Engineer (Current Employee)
Irvine, CA

I have been working at Covidien full-time for more than a year

ProsAverage organization still attempting to find a corporate culture after multiple acquisitions. A lot of technical and engineering resources at various sites.

ConsMinimal work/life balance due to multiple and conflicting priorities from corporate and site level leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementStreamline decision making at the site. Provide transparency to available corporate resources and training available to all sites.

Strong performance, big corporate nature, competitive pay and benefits

Senior Manager Global Marketing (Current Employee)
Denver, CO

I have been working at Covidien full-time for more than 3 years

ProsStrong performance, brand recognition (good resume builder) and work-life balance. The stocks have doubled in the past 3 years and are going strong. Having a global market leader on the resume is definitely a plus.

ConsConstant re-organizations: some people got 6+ bosses in 4 years. As a result, people are constantly worry about their job and are not motivated.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop re-orgs! People can't make or stick with any long-term goals if they don't know where they will be in 6 months.

A great learning environment

Project Managerer (Former Employee)
Mansfield, MA

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 3 years

ProsCovidien still functions like a small company. This is great because the bureaucracy is very limited and you can actually get things accomplished. You also get the chance to learn about many different aspects of the company since you wear a few different "hats" in your position.

ConsThe downside is that corporate politics are pretty bad here. There are some great people who work here but upper management sets a bad tone for the company. The other issue is staffing. You are asked to do too much. I know people who were bringing work home on weekends. The work everyone to death. For a healthcare company the benefits are not really that good in comparison to other companies in the field.

Bad Management, Good Co-Workers, Stymied By Fear

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than a year

ProsThere are a lot of learning opportunities i.e. Six Sigma or computer programs/systems. Covidien does off excellent benefits, 3 weeks vacation, matched 401K, stock purchase program, and yearly bonus.

ConsThere is no job security. Every couple of months, there is another staff reduction/reorganization. Outsourcing is the key driver for the mass layoffs. Since staffing is shrinking, every department is understaffed and overworked. There is absolutely no work/life balance so say goodbye to your health, hobbies, and personal relationships. Covidien does not allow employees to be references for former colleagues.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow about you get rid of the free coffee and 12 flatscreen TVs per building and try to save someone's job? Oh yeah, appearances... For a company with growing profits, how do you justify the thousands of people you have cut loose over the past couple of months? Outsourcing is going to bite you in the ass.

Tough culture to meet deadlines and deliverables

Manager, R&D (Former Employee)
Boulder, CO

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat people to work with, lots of diversity in tasks and products, and a strong customer focus to better understand the market and product environment.

ConsManagement is constantly changing its mind, so projects are started and stopped, then often started again. Very little continuity in workstreams, and often no accomplishments at the end of the project.

Advice to Senior ManagementSlow down and trust your people.

I have worked at Covidien for 6 years and have enjoyed my role.

Senior Account Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Covidien full-time for more than 5 years

Pros-Work/Life balance is great
-Colleagues are intelligent and drive you to be successful
-Training is very in depth and most marketing teams really know their product and business segments

Cons-HR is non existent to sales reps. You have to network and create your own opportunities if you want to move up
-HQ controls all pricing decisions at field level and they don't always get back to you in a timely manner when you are trying to close a deal
-Marketing and sales are not aligned to the same compensation incentives

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower the field to make good business decisions

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
