    Pros

Covidien offers good benefits, work culture and opportunities to grow. As long as you can show initiation - company usually support your efforts.

    Cons

Covidien Leadership team sometimes get short sighted and miss out on long term opportunity, but this seem to be a problem in general for all Medical Device companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be great if we can figure out a means to invest in longer term opportunities without losing track on near term opportunities.

    Pros

You have the ability to work with different groups of people from operators to executive staff. They are trying to make changes to standardize processes across business units.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure to meet deadlines with a lack of direction from management. It doesn't matter how you get the task done, just get it done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your greatest asset should be your people not cost savings.

I worked at Covidien as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

For the most part, good people, decent benefits, ok work environment. Some projects are interesting, but a lot depends on who you're placed with - it's kind of luck of the draw there.

    Cons

Compensation could be better, company is going through a merger so job cuts likely, can be bureaucratic and slow to adopt new ideas. Tends to adopt a more conservative approach than some competitors, which may lead to them being outmaneuvered.

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Carlsbad, CA
Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Carlsbad, CA

I worked at Covidien full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Used to be a senior software engineer there. Covidien, formerly Tyco Healthcare, is a conglomerate which grew by acquisition. This brings interesting technologies into the mix, but unfortunately doesn't always have the mettle to take it to the market the right way. Pay is decent, work-life balance depends on who you work for. Time-off policies standard.

    Cons

The management many times doesn't believe in the products. Some would see products as just vehicle to advance their careers. This then translates to all engineering department as just something that drags down the expense sheet instead of recognizing that good engineering is what make medical devices safe and sells for years to come. Promotion is hard to get unless you do 150% your normal workload. Working harder (more hours), not smarter (more output) is rewarded. Also they believe all engineers are interchangable, regardless background and expertise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys are getting bought by Medtronic. The merge will probably annihilate your positions. But if not, try to build a better synergy with engineering team, not just the marketing and sales.
