    I worked at Covidien full-time

    Pros

Great work environment, fun work, great learning experience. A good place to learn what engineering in the real world is like. The other engineers and upper management take a personal interest in your development. Assignments are challenging and interesting.

    Cons

Testing can become monotonous. Sometimes a change of pace is needed. I found myself doing a lot of the same things over and over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Travel experiences would be fun. More insight into upper level engineering would be beneficial.

I have been working at Covidien full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great culture and work place

Very risky time with being acquired by Medtronics

Covidien corporate campus in Manasfield will lose several jobs over the next few years as all of the corporate functions including global sourcing will move to Medtronics headquarters in Minnesota

    Cons

    Poor career development

Design R & D in Medical Supplies needs a culture change as schedules are often missed and NPI launches delayed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees right during the acquisition or they will leave as the job market in Boston area is very good right now

Problems with Medical Supplies R & D group with too many independent engineers that end up costing the company millions in late schedules on NPI projects and with poor designs

I worked at Covidien as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Not many to speak of. Some coworkers were nice, but the overwhelming majority of them were incompetent and rude. There was some free reign to learn and gain experience.

    Cons

Management from top to bottom was highly unprofessional. Pay was not consistent with economy. Work here only if you're truly desperate!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean house!

    Covidien as a workplace

    I worked at Covidien

    Pros

Outstanding, full-benefit employment company. From cafeterias to a gym with fitness classes, from benefits to bonuses, this is a solid place to work. Work there is conducted at a manageable pace, for the most part. Compensation packages are strong.

    Cons

At times it is a stultifying, old-school workplace that has a hard time functioning outside its core competencies. This was certainly true in terms of business intelligence projects. The company seems to be too large at times to wag its own tail.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is okay to consider business outside of medical device creation, and to follow through with successes in efforts already underway that could help the company do just that.

I worked at Covidien full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good Work environment, nice facilities

    Cons

All lifers and have bad behavior, good old boys club with little knowledge of a world class organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Medtronic is buying Cov they should clean house at the Sr. executive level. Replace with non lifers that are open to change.

    Pros

You have the ability to work with different groups of people from operators to executive staff. They are trying to make changes to standardize processes across business units.

    Cons

There is a lot of pressure to meet deadlines with a lack of direction from management. It doesn't matter how you get the task done, just get it done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your greatest asset should be your people not cost savings.

I worked at Covidien as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

For the most part, good people, decent benefits, ok work environment. Some projects are interesting, but a lot depends on who you're placed with - it's kind of luck of the draw there.

    Cons

Compensation could be better, company is going through a merger so job cuts likely, can be bureaucratic and slow to adopt new ideas. Tends to adopt a more conservative approach than some competitors, which may lead to them being outmaneuvered.
