I worked at Cowles Publishing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Family owned and operated; good benefits,

    Cons

It was tough to get the compensation I needed but eventually they came around

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent with employees. After all, it's the people that make you who you are.

    Pros

Pay is good for the area. Great vacation time, two weeks after first year, three after five, four after ten and five after twenty.

    Cons

Pay and benefits are dropping as the news paper industry declines. Layoffs and cutbacks. Employees are concerned about their future.

    Advice to Management

Stacey and company are trying to save a centuries old business that is taking a hit from modern technology. I wish him luck.

    Pros

Great colleagues. Still a great town to work in. Good benefits package, and this is a company committed to expanding its use of technology. There are still some internal barriers to technology deployment... but it's a forward-thinking organization, if a bit too much focused on satisfying shareholder concerns for higher returns.

    Cons

Management is overly keen on instituting a cheap tier of newsroom salaries. Basically company want to gut the current contract, diminish salaries and hold down labor expenses when other costs are not being equally controlled.

    Advice to Management

Work harder at establishing stronger ties with area advertisers.

    Pros

Beautiful part of California. Professional knowledgeable staff to learn from. Put out an award winning product.

    Cons

The market is slow to recover here, therefore tough to get new and existing clients to invest marketing dollars. Morale of staff is low. No salary only commission with unliveable draw. Lack of training of basics to the job.

    Advice to Management

Get more sales support. Less paperwork. More lead time on special programs & promos. Better planning.
