Pros
Very organized, when it comes to getting paid, benefits package, or finding information on current work duties. I also like their ticketing systems which were very good, and I used it to find out how to do my job better and to find out what problems others in my position have faced. i.e. website password reset issues, or how to fix a known IT problem (I am in IT).
Cons
Some of the management were not as knowledgable as some of the employees in some tasks, so just like any large corporation, there was a lot of kiss up people, but that's any job.
Advice to Senior Management
I would say to allow more people to move into senior roles.
Pros
good benefits, opportunities for advancement, dynamic environment in some locales where new positions are being created to follow the income streams
Cons
Changing marketplace means some positions and opportunities are evaporating, creating tense atmosphere in the office I was in, where employee morale was falling
Advice to Senior Management
realize that employees being asked to provided information that may lead to their position being eliminated have little incentive to cooperate with management
Pros
Excellent assignment of projects. Flexible work hours. Moderate workload
Cons
Can not hire H1B visas
Advice to Senior Management
Please try to hire H1B's and encourage talent.
Pros
Great work. High caliber of competence.
Cons
Bureaucratic. Senior leadership needs to provide higher standards of accountability.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior leadership needs to provide higher standards of accountability. The decentralized decision making process is making the organization less competitive.
Pros
Flex Hours
Telecommuting
Good Benefits Package
Employee Discounts
Volunteer Opportunities
No Micro Management
Relaxed Work Environment
Cons
Technology is not cutting edge.
Pros
9-to-5 and weekdays work schedule, can refuse to do work without repercussion. Low stress because management is satisfied being #5 in the cable/satelite industry. If you are unable to track project budgets well, this place is for you because the budgets are guess-work.
Cons
If you have ambition to achieve or work for top-tier company, you will be frustrated here. Project financial management is so unorthodox, it really isn't managed. Good place to learn what NOT to do because that's the "best practice" at Cox Communications. Union mentality, 9-to-5, weekdays only, no competitiveness to be #1 company in industry, job security contributes to lack of competitiveness, good talent leaves company leaving the less talented to be promoted (Peter's Principle survives well here), penny-pinching company.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't rely on the deep pockets of the Cox family or the security of the state utilities commission carved geographic areas for different cable companies. Since 2008, AT&T and Verizon each have already reached 4 million customers with Uverse and FIOS, compared to your 6 million customers. It won't be long before your market share is reduced to less than AT&T Uverse and/or Verizon FIOS. Cox Communications will lose market share and fade into oblivion. Your work force is not competitive.
Pros
Great environment, great people, great perks and recognition events were stellar. Some senior management was very hands on which is rare
Cons
Unfair treatment, favortisn, unfair promotions, politics, standards, metrics, working on the weekends. Changing of duties and titles without proper training
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to your plotted feedback. They are the backbone to the company. Their needs/desires and keeping them happy is critical to company success and can reduce turn over
Pros
Good work life balance
Can branch out in job duties
Very friendly co-workers
Management is always willing to listen
Cons
Can get stagnant, especially for people working on the tech side
Mature market. Cable industry as such is facing many challenges to from Internet/Data revolution.
Not easy to move up the corporate ladder within
Pay & Bonus average
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize and promote leaders from within
Increase speed to market, especially with new product offerings
Adopt new technology rather than playing catchup later
Pros
Still growing, overall performing very well, interesting technology, ethical and moral company
Cons
Culture changing, recent huge turnover in senior management
Advice to Senior Management
Too much change and it's happening too slowly.
Pros
Fairly decently pay and pretty good benefits. It is definitely an employee-centric company. As an example, I got an e-mail one day talking about changes to the vacation program. It was an across-the-board increase in vacation days for everyone. Normally when you see a change to benefits, it negatively impacts the employee, regardless of how management tries to sell it.
Cons
Hardcore politicking can leave mediocre groups looking like superstars to the point where on VP meetings people get applauded for showing up while teams working 60 hour weeks are ignored. Some managers pinch pennies in the hopes it makes them look like superstars but they're oblivious to the fact upper management could care less about that when it comes time to cut headcount.
Advice to Senior Management
Like so many executives in this country, they begin to believe their own hype and infallibility. Cox Communications is spending billions of dollars building a new line of business using last generation technology. As such, the business units that are profitable are getting cut to continue to throw money into the abyss.
Look at what your sister companies (Comcast, Time Warner) are doing and more importantly, not doing. If Comcast and Time Warner don't think it is a good idea to spend tens of billions on something, how can Cox do it with millions? Laying off profitable business units to fund deficits is a recipe for disaster.
