    I worked at Cox Communications

    Pros

Cox is a progressive and culturally defined company whose leadership teams are empowered to do what's best for its customers and the company. Personal Health, Family, and Company is the company imperative.

From the corporate perspective Cox transitioned from a public to private company back in the early 2000's. Jim Robbins was second to none in his leadership and business acumen. Pat Esser replaced Mr. Robbins and subsequently has continued to lead by example and deliver the expected results

    Cons

Working with many different people bring many different personalities to the forefront when leading them. Taking the necessary time to develop and grow the staff to encourage the buy-in to the vision, mission, and goals of the company can take its toll. This is by means NO SLAP to Cox. It's LIFE and every company that has challenge when more than three people working creates the potential for cultural improvement leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Speaking from personal experience and having served two tours with Cox, my best advice to leadership is to encourage everybody "Check" their egos in at the door.

    Pros

Management makes genuine efforts to keep their people happy. Great training/onboarding for new hires. Wages increase nicely with time - 50% increase in about 3.5 years.

    Cons

Can sometimes feel like you are in high school the way policies are implemented and enforced. Customers generally are a drag too.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more opportunities for senior employees to transition into new roles / departments. Far to common for people to stagnate and get perma-stuck as field techs because they've got nowhere else to go internally and the pay is easily better than anything else they can find externally with their unique skillset.

    Pros

Lot's of downtime since no customers come to visit much anymore. Gym access at the Herndon location.

    Cons

Management has made too many errors for No. Va to stay viable. Entire workforce has been downsized. Middle managers with zero retail experience put in place and have failed by changing team from proactive sellers to reactive babysitters. No clear direction, will be sold to Comcast in short order.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire from within rather than lateral movement of other failed/downsized areas. Sell your dwindling customer base to Comcast before your area is worth nothing and lost completely to FiOS. You played a game of chicken with so many loyal customers and lost thinking they'd pay 2x what your competitor would offer with lesser technology.

I have been working at Cox Communications full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice techonolgy in stores. Decent employees. Big company. Incentives.

    Cons

Cox overlooks there hiring process for managers. I have seen many managers fired with my tenture working with cox. The district management for retail shows alot of unprofessional and should have not gotten the position to start with. Commission structure always changes and they do not want you to make alot of money. Cox retail did have their golden days which was 3 years ago but not anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More oversight over hiring managers. Pick better management give them less control and do not let them overrun the whole department to slow the growth of their sales superstars.

    Pros

    Good training events.
If you produce, the money is great. Spiffs are good.

    Cons

The company changes things constantly. If a process is created on Monday, it may change by next Monday. It leads to confusion and paperwork issues.
There are more than 50 reps tasked to sell in one county. That leads to constant disputes and a very aggressive environment between sales representatives.

I worked at Cox Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Instability of job security. Upper Management (Corporate) has no clue what is going on and does not make any provisions for changes. Constant "restructuring" which usually does more harm than good. They used to have a decent bonus structure but Corporate has taken that away too.

    Cons

Lower Management and coworkers VERY nice. Decent Benefits. Good for family life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan effectively for changes. Listen to lower management. If it is not broken, don't "fix" it.

I have been working at Cox Communications

    Pros

    Comped Services
    Decent Salary
    Fair Benefits
    Company involvement in the community

    Cons

Work-Life Balance unequally distributed; slogan only to many
    Unequal treatment/expectations of staff
Unprofessional behavior abundant (observed from HR to peers)
    Focus on profit, not service

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop confusing customer/staff with deals after deal, followed by increases; provide good service and cut hidden fees. Become a technical leader; invest in technology instead of riding on competitor coattails. Yes, it costs more, but the ROI is long-term; customer satisfaction and loyalty. Also, tout the advancements you have even if you didn't hit the market first with them; customers won't dig for this information. Most importantly; integrity. Management working from fear produces unscrupulous behavior, and stuff apparently still rolls downhill.
