Pros
- We got to create our own internship experience.
- Great open door exposure to senior management.
- Created lead lists and made cold calls to set up future meetings with the Sales Reps.
- Was given a lot of responsibility if I just asked for it.
- I worked on many diverse projects (digital media, targeting, lead generation, online research, marketing initiatives, processing newspaper ads, etc).
- Had informational 30+ minutes one-on-one meetings with each manager in the Sales Department .
- Had opportunities to learn firsthand & explore various career paths by shadowing employees in multiple departments in the company (Editorial Staff, Marketing Dept., B2C Sales Reps, & the B2B Sales Reps)
Cons
- At times there was not enough to do in order to contribute and stay busy.
- The intern manager was often traveling for work, so it was difficult to have certain questions answered.
Advice to Senior Management
- Would have liked the opportunity to apply the knowledge learned about the company in role plays or by presenting it to other interns.
- Have the interns make more cold calls to set x number of meetings per week for the Sales Reps.
- Just ask for what you want the internship to be like.
- It was a great experience and I learned a lot! Continue to offer internships with your company.
Pros
A good salary and benefit package compared to similar jobs elsewhere; open door policy with most senior management, good opportunities for training
Cons
Poor coordination between departments, "ivory tower" thinking in senior management as well as a lack of effective leadership, very low morale
Pros
Decent Benefits
There are some nice people within the company.
Job security, but hardly any room to move up.
Cons
Poor management.
Total disregard for your well-being.
This company will do anything to pinch pennies.
Horrendous pay, unless you are management.
Advice to Senior Management
You might want to at least pretend you value your employees. Maybe then you won't be such a revolving door. Start listening to your employees, and quit thinking about your bottom line (your budget.) You have hard-working people, at least pay them fairly.
Pros
Good working environment. People at the company valued the opinions of interns just like another employee. Overal, it was a good choice to work.
Cons
Pay wasn't that great. Too many bosses to report to. Company seemed disorganized at times with their agendas. Not too bad though.
Advice to Senior Management
They should have more of an inclusive management style that has an open door policy. Sometimes I had no clue what a going on in the firm.
Pros
there are some great people here.
Cons
they treat employees poorly, there is a lot of drama, people cannot be trusted, upper management does not make good decisions.
Advice to Senior Management
when you ask employees opinions- actually take them into consideration. stop pretending like you're listening.
Pros
Relaxed atmosphere, the wearing of jeans daily is encouraged. People are friendly and engaging. Facilities are nice with an included cafeteria serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Cons
My only disappointment is in the downsizing being experienced with all newspaper publishing firms. My department is being dissolved and the work being sent to an affiliated in another state. The downside is the state of the industry rather than the employer itself.
Advice to Senior Management
Talk to your employees down the scale. Feedback by the lower echelon can be quite informative. I really wished upper management asked me about a few key situations.
Pros
Smart people and challenging work. Generally a fun environment but can be grim at times but that's to be expected from any company that has a newspaper division in this day and age.
Cons
Zero advancement opportunities - once you join a department or division you'll be performing the same role in that department or division until you retire or switch to a different department or division.
Advice to Senior Management
A little respect goes a long way, say "thank you" from time to time. Make employees feel like all the hard work and pride we put into our roles is appreciated.
Pros
Cox is a good solid organization with plenty of opportunity. The organizations is very diverse and the benefits are very affordable from a pay period contribution perspective.
Cons
Managers promote based on emmotion, company lacks good training resources, new hires can feel left out and unincluded because of information hoarding within the departments. You may not always have the systems access to do your job. Managers will hold you back if you want to promote and they need you in their department. Make sure you offer letter specifically spells out what youhave negotiated or management will re-interpret what was discussed.
Advice to Senior Management
Provide more training for new hire employees and promote inclusion. New hire employees fell left out inthe cold. Also, Manager training is needed for new managers as well as a mentor.
Pros
Great benefits and company perks, such as discounts on your cable and internet bills. Most people are very nice and the product is great to represent (TV networks such as ESPN, Comedy Central, etc.) The hours are decent and balance between work and life is generally good. The pay is good if you're making your quota.
Cons
My first 2 years were great, then the economy took a turn for the worst and we went from heaven to hell in a blink of an eye. They have ZERO loyalty for their employees - they like you if they're making money off you, when things get tough, they become the Queen of Hearts "off with your head". To make matters worse, there's rampant favoritism going on from management. Since quotas are set by management and their account policies are "subject to final management decision" then you'd better have a best friend or two in management to float you during tough times. It's a place where the right brown nosing definitely pays off. So, if you're good at the politics game, this might be your place. If not, move on!
Advice to Senior Management
You still have an opportunity to turn this around and make it the place it once was - the pride and joy of the cable industry. Go back to basics, and take care of your people in the bad times, not only in the good times. You can't always expect double digit profits, especially in a bad economy. Establish AND enforce a monitoring system to ensure managers are not playing favorites. And if employees raise concerns to the mid or upper levels, do not turn your head and pretend "it happens in every industry.' Look at the long term performance and future potential of your employees, not only at the last few months resulting from an economic crisis. Value employees who have a long tenure and don't favor newer, more "politically adept " employees over the loyal ones that have proven their performance throughout the years. Come up with an alternate plan to weather the financial storms keeping your integrity and loyalty to your employees.
Pros
Great, fun culture. Super nice office. Great if you are young.
Cons
Poor incentives to stay and work.
