I have been working at Cracker Barrel part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

-Flexible hours (most likely because there are 20 other people who can take your place)
    -Friendly managers
-Good introduction to the restaurant industry

    Cons

-If you are hoping to get a lot of hours, this is definitely not the place to work.
-Ridiculously strict on uniform. For example, a coworker almost got sent home for having the wrong type of back pockets on her pants.
-Very low overall employee morale, no one ever wants to be working there.
-If you are a minor, don't expect to ever get more than 4 hour shifts because they are too cheap to pay for breaks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire less people, we all are more than willing to accept more hours!

I worked at Cracker Barrel part-time

    Pros

50% off of your lunch or dinners when you are clocked in, discount in the shop, pretty much it.

    Cons

Their model no matter if you ate a server or in the shop, is to have lots of people work, with minimal hours. We had 15 people in the shop and most of us averaged 4-8 hours per week. This was poor only job. The pay is very lousy, and their technology was so out of date it would take you 20 minutes to look up anything for a customer. The amount of stuff they manage to cram into the store, the lack of space, and then the people having to wait in there are enough to drive anyone nuts. Their trainings are a joke as well. It's nothing but "we are a family" and videos about the CEO's saying the same thing. I wasted my time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update your technology, have a decent sites of hours, stop giving your management awards they don't deserve based on revenues or they only generate because they are in a certain area or are your favorites.

    Server

    I worked at Cracker Barrel

    Pros

I worked at a busy store so the money was pretty steady. Health insurance offered though most hourly employees don't take advantage it. Flexible depending on whether you work day or night. Day shifts are easier to swap because working nights is not as popular.

    Cons

I think the Cracker Barrel business model makes life very hard on their employees. Often during mid shifts there is very little back of the house support. I understand that Cracker Barrel is controlling costs by keeping labor expenditures low but this is a major reason why the guest experience suffers. I think servers pay the price for this because there is so much out of the control of the server. Mix this with condescending managers who hate their jobs because the District Manager is making their life hell. I know for a fact that most of the current management is looking for other employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think many managers do the best they can but I sometimes feel that the company is setting them up for failure. There are others who are just collecting a paycheck. You can't keep talented back of house crew if pay is not competitive. Makes it hard to keep employees happy.

I have been working at Cracker Barrel part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Discounts, can PAR (advance) up in the company one month after being hired...

    Cons

I am a hostess; servers come up to the podium (more times than not) to look at the rotation sheet. If you have a guest that requests to sit elsewhere, it's not your fault that you didn't get the next server in line sat. I also heard servers talking about me in the vestibule and they were not saying words of encouragement... Keep in mind, my very first shift aside from training was on a Sunday and I was ALONE. I spoke with managers and told them I wasn't quite comfortable being on my own yet, they told me I would be a 2nd or 3rd hostess and that they wouldn't throw me out to the wolves, but right away they did.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with what you tell your employees. You're all about "Pleasing People"; that pertains to guests as well as employees. My specific CB has a problem with employees walking out; maybe this is a hint to better the restaurant?

I have been working at Cracker Barrel

    Pros

It's a little better than fast food. As a server, you can make some decent money. The store atmosphere is nice with the old country style.

    Cons

Managers aren't the brightest. Too much turnover from poor hires and bad management. Some stores have their process down pat but the store I work at currently, is terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Think strategically.
