Good place to advance journalism career, though management could be improved

    Reporter (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsColleagues are really smart and really know the industries they are covering. Salaries are also decent. Offices are also quite nice.

ConsSome of the upper level editors are very stuck in their ways and are not amenable to listening to other ideas, points of view.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease listen more to reporters and ask for their feedback, rather than just relying on senior editors.

Every day, something new to complain about

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

Proshard to think of any pros... starting salary was ok, but I hear from fellow employees the raises are 1% per year... ability to work from home is good too, but that's most jobs nowadays

ConsTerrible management (upper mgmt at this pub is a clique and out of touch), horrible benefits, employees seem to work well into the late hours of the night/early morning, passive/aggressive emails

Advice to Senior Managementunderstand what your employees actually do and show some appreciation, hire staff necessary to complete tasks

    Great Company to work for!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent products - absolutely best in class . Overall really great people - nice, hardworking and very smart. Crain family really cares about and takes care of their employees. Strong family values. Younger Crain family members have a great vision for the future. Offices are very nice and clean.

ConsStill outdated in many centralized corporate areas, however that is finally starting to change. Legacy staff in the Detroit office can be very political. Some people have stayed for so long that their skills are a bit outdated.

Advice to Senior ManagementLots of transition and progess taking place across the company - keep it up! Continue upgrading the corporate leadership ranks and investing in technology and digital product offerings.

    On a steady decline

    Sales (Former Employee)
    Akron, OH

ProsGreat editorial - Crain's has excellent writers and editors. They produce industry/market-leading editorial. The pay is decent.

ConsCrain's is stuck in a different era...one seemingly without computers and the internet. Old technology, antiquated enterprise systems, and a poor understanding of how to engage readers online and offline. Their company had better get with the times or it will continue its downhill slide. Too many of the company's publications are run by publishers who are ancient and have no idea how to run a publication in the 21st century. They have even less idea of how to treat employees right. Basic respect and a grasp of work/life balance would be a good start.

The company is closing publications and cutting staff at others. Morale is poor and I don't see what can make it better at thus point.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some money to try to save this sinking ship. Bring in some new blood to energize the publications. Give people the tools they need to excel (start with a CRM system built in this century). Start doing something useful with the results from the annual employee survey.

    Still in America, for now.

    Art Director (Former Employee)
    Detroit, MI

ProsNice Clean Offices. Good benefits package for full time employees. Usually a year end holiday bonus. New equipment Computers.

ConsMoving as much work as possible overseas for cheap labor? Always adding more to the to do list and nothing more to the paycheck. Extra work is not always rewarded.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive raises to employees that go beyond the listed requirements. Those that have a proven track record of getting more done.

Individual publications have a high degree of autonomy - which is not always a good thing

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood people - very talented and highly ethical. Excellent products. Crain's publications are like Bibles within their respective industries and regions.

ConsAt the corporate level, Crain's is a bit behind the times but moving quickly to catch up. The company's technology is a mess but they are investing a lot in improvements. The company seems to be committed to improving its HR operations and annual surveys are a step in the right direction. But creating an improved work environment hasn't trickled down to all of the publications yet.

Individual publications have a high degree of autonomy so corporate doesn't have much influence over their operations. As a result, some pubs are run better than others. The environment at the pubs that are not as well-run is dismal. Employee morale is very low, probably because management treats employees like children. Balance and flexibility is non-existent and people are micro-managed to the point where they can't even enjoy their jobs. Change and innovation are desperately needed within the publishing industry but it happens too slow at some pubs. Without a significant leadership change at these lower performing pubs, the outlook is not good.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuite frankly, corporate needs to take a hard look at some of its publications and make some changes.
