Good for Lifers, bad for personal growth

I worked at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time

    Pros

Most of the people I worked with directly were nice and friendly. Seems difficult for the company to let anyone go. That is, unless you did something horrible you probably wouldn't get fired...Keeping headcount is important for middle management.
The fruit/cookies they give away every once and a while (maybe once a month) was nice.
    Company somehow is always profitable.

    Cons

It felt as though innovation and growth was frowned upon...
It felt like there were many underperforming "lifers"
    Talented people leave quickly.
    Compensation/benefits are average at best
There are multiple, pretty independent sites. Company Politics made cross-site technological implementations difficult.
Middle Management felt unwilling to listen to the ideas of subordinates.
Half the time work/life balance was ok, the other half it was pretty terrible

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better incentives for talented people to stay. Talented people are leaving from frustration. Weed out the ones not doing their job. Don't keep them around just because they are the only ones that know how the system works.

I have been working at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

People are capable, care about each other and have fun with each other. There is opportunity to reach for different/additional challenges (at least within professional ranks).

    Cons

Employee turn-over is high. Company success relies too heavily on extreme individual effort instead of an adequately staffed organization,. Many people work very long hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it clear to employees that it is up to them to limit their workload - that management will NOT do it. Assign designated backups for every role - it is not okay for the organization to falter because an individual is sick or on vacation.

I have been working at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Crane A&E supplies niche electronics to both commercial and defense customers. Most company workers have been there for quite a while which suggests that they are happy. Crane products are of good quality and do not depend on breakout technologies to compete.

    Cons

The Crane management culture appears to be changing (more demanding) as their senior leadership is replaced and their BOD demands higher profit margins. The friendly atmosphere that was once enjoyed is now more stressful and less secure. Some good people are leaving and some are being asked to leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Crane needs to think more like their customers and realize that their inward looking perspective is hurting their business approach

I have been working at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good location if you live south of Lynnwood. Relaxed atmosphere. Good place to work if you want to contribute your specified share, then go home. They do allow "work from home" for Engineers and those who are tied to PC's all day.

    Cons

Easy to get stuck in one role. No professional development budget to stay current in field. New Engineers have no incentive to remain beyond a few years at most. Little possibility of affecting a positive change in methods, tools, or ideology. Noisy work environment makes it difficult to get any serious work accomplished (thankful for work-from-home policy).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your Engineers, Managers, and Technicians in person. There is currently no reasonable dialogue between employees that are new and/or eager to engage in new challenges.

I worked at Crane Aerospace & Electronics as an intern

    Pros

Interesting stuff going on in the company. Very friendly and smart people to work with. Good compensation in pay. They will work with you to make sure you are happy with your internship.

    Cons

Slow to change to be competitive with other companies. Need to be more innovative to create new job opportunities.

I have been working at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

New president shows hope for the companies future, He says the right things. Amazingly high profit for Aerospace.

BTW, the president of Crane Aerospace and Electronics is NOT Bob Tavaris, it's Brendan

    Cons

Most of the perc's for working at Crane Aerospace are gone. there is no stock options, bonus plan, the retirement plan has been cut nearly in half, turnover is very high. Especially in Burbank, the facility is an old army barrack. Horrible facility. We had record sales the last couple of years, still the merit pool was 1%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend the money, fix the aging buildings, replace the old DOS based test equipment, etc. Focus on employee retention.

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to advance and gain knowledge.

    Cons

Long hours and lower to average pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge the employees who work hard to keep company going with monetary rewards. Bonuses need to be reality when sales goals are exceeded and not a mirage in the distant realm of possiblity.

I have been working at Crane Aerospace & Electronics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nothing positive of a company that has no identity. Two different companies acquired to make up the Crane Burbank organization, and neither care about the actual Crane Company. The two different entities continually belittle each other to the detriment of the overall organization.

    Cons

Poor leadership at the top. They beat down the middle level managers and supervisors, and it's expected that the work force to work 6 days a week at a minimum of 10 hours a day. You make an honest mistake and your job is threatened. While leadership and clerical staff enjoys the holidays off, the assembly and direct support teams are forced to work to reach quota's.
