Philanthropy may be all that's left.

Investment Banking IT Vice President (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsPockets of talented individuals. Vast amount of training opportunities. Focus on philanthropy.

ConsChallenging regulatory environment and lackluster performance has led to aggressive cost cutting. Multiple organizational restructures. Almost impossible to get promoted or compensated. Everyone in survival mode.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not lose focus on taking care of your talented employees, even in this challenging environment. The job market is improving, and you will lose talent if you do not compensate or promote.

Pros- Generally good reputation among large cap clients
    - Generally ethnically diverse
    - Paid a reasonable salary and bonus
    - Work/life balance varies greatly across groups, but is on par with the other investment banks

Cons- Perennially considered a second tier investment bank
    - Has a small balance sheet for a balance sheet bank and could strategically allocate more capital to the more strategic clients
    - Facing recent regulatory related challenges
    - NYC office is located in midtown south. Midtown proper is better

    Running to stand still

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsIncreasing focus on improving work-life balance of junior bankers.

ConsFewer opportunities for promotion despite continued "up or out" mentality. Limited long-term career prospects given lack of movement among senior ranks. Many senior bankers (as well as the firm) incentivized to maintain status quo due to large amounts of deferred comp accumulated since pre-crisis years.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on improving work-life balance of junior bankers is a positive; however, current efforts to limit work days and hours is misguided. Overall workload remains largely unchanged, leaving mid-level bankers to do more with less (support), for less (reward). Suggest aligning incentives of junior and senior bankers instead to create a true team-oriented culture (as opposed to an artificial, manufactured one).

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
