I worked at Credit Suisse full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A supportive environment that fosters personal/professional development. Work-life balance is attainable depending on your role and which area of the business you work in.

    Cons

Although a highly supportive culture, one sometimes has to push for sponsorship due to pockets of politics (like you get pretty much every where).

I have been working at Credit Suisse as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Latest technology, some smart people, working from home policy

    Cons

Contractor churn, staff turnover is high due to cost cutting. No continuity of staff in technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage continuity of staff and invest rather than seeking to cut costs. Cost cutting is false economy by moving to "low-cost" centers. Knowedge of the CS environment is walking out the door on a regular basis and costing you money.

I worked at Credit Suisse as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The people in this department are on the whole very friendly, management were very encouraging and always on hand to help.
The work was generally interesting and challenging, with plenty of responsibilities given to interns.
The set up of the internship was well organised.
Excellent benefits - good salary, food, gym etc.
Opportunities outside of work for socialising, sport etc.
Careers progression seems to be fairly quick.

    Cons

Work life balance is poor, and this was in the 'quiet' summer period. Staff commonly worked 12 hour shifts or more.
Other interns seemed to have (perhaps self imposed) pressure to complete deadlines that resulted in nights and weekends spent in the office.
A lot of employees (especially younger ones) seem to be there purely for the money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on productivity and the amount of work done rather than purely hours spent in the office.

I have been working at Credit Suisse full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent philanthropic program as well as lots of networks and societies to join. Majority of staff are very welcoming and friendly.

    Cons

Lots of politics and some management are very unfriendly, they will not even acknowledge you unless you have a title which is very frustrating. Promotions are scarce and you have to play the game. Working hours can be long and there is still a stigma if you leave before 6. Pay rises and bonuses are seldom seen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change attitudes towards flexible working arrangements and better work life balance.

I worked at Credit Suisse as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Intern program is well organised by HR, salary good as well. Smart, hardworking people. Very professional. Was allocated a senior mentor who was helpful. You get to sit with some other teams for a day so it gives a good overview. Good food.

    Cons

Atmosphere was not that great in the team I was placed in, as they had just fired most of the team, and by some it was taken out on me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It might be better not to place interns in teams that have been decimated as it does not help with integrating.

    Pros

Friendly people, nice offices located in the Canary Wharf district. Good working environment. Spring week featured many workshops and opportunities to meet industry players

    Cons

Lack of transparency in recruiting process. Who gets what is unclear, especially at the more junior levels. Training is a little rushed at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    More transparency

    Pros

relaxed culture, pay attention to employee needs

    Cons

not risk takers, very passive and not at all aggressive. attracts risk averse , non-entrepreneurial people especially at associate level and above. More attention paid to the Private Banking department and less on the IBD over the last few years

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

you are competing against more established players in the industry

Good culture in a difficult environment

Former Employee - Director in London, England (UK)
Former Employee - Director in London, England (UK)

I worked at Credit Suisse full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Senior management reasonable, trying to manage the business in a difficult environment where tough personnel decisions have to be taken on an almost daily basis. Management is generally visible and available for discussion. HR is trying hard to instill a culture of rewards that are of non-financial nature which is difficult to push through in a banking environment.

    Cons

Cost containment measures a major on-going focus, which can be dispiriting. Below-average comp. Regulation is a very heavy burden for investment banks, and CS is no exception. Over time, this has changed the type of person that works in an investment bank (not just at CS), such that the work environment is now less thrilling or intellectually satisfying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Is there any way to shrink the back office such that the money saved can go to better reward those employees that actually bring in the money?
