The little train that couldn't

Former Software Developer (Former Employee)
Boxborough, MA

I worked at Crossbeam full-time for more than a year

ProsThe co-workers were nice, most everyone did do their best under the circumstances.

ConsToo many 'chiefs' to supervise a small crew.
Too depend on 3rd party software product to generate sales.
Company struggled to control of its destiny.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the new owners: create a flatter, not fatter, organization, with less management and more engineers.

Investor buyout leaves employees out in the cold;

Manager, Services (Former Employee)
Boxborough, MA

I worked at Crossbeam full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe people at Crossbeam were all very conscientious, were very good at what they did, and worked together as teams.
There was opportunity to grow there when I first started.
They have a very interesting, technically complex product.

ConsBusiness model that depends on independent software vendors IP is a non-starter. Company cannot grow as currently configured, and growth opportunities disappeared for employees.
Investor buyout has triggered severe austerity measures, including downsizing by >25%; company stock options vaporized as part of buyout.

Good, unique technology, but tough market. Great customer base.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsChallenging marquee customers/accounts that Crossbeam has earned the respect for in a competitive landscape.

ConsUnpredictable market conditions can lead to inconsistent results, this is commonplace for the industry.

Was a great company but still have a chance for a success.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Crossbeam

ProsCrossbeam has great technology and a lot of possibilities to champion it's success.

ConsCompany is driven from product side by engineering which is quite conservative and VP for Services tries to control almost every aspect of communication and does the micromanagement.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet people do their job and trust them. Most of experienced people from services team already left as new comers were constantly promoted even when demonstrated lack of required skills.
