    Mixed experience

I have been working at Crowell & Moring full-time

    Pros

They are known for giving junior attorneys meaningful work very early. This is pretty rare in my experience as a lawyer. It is generally a very friendly atmosphere.

    Cons

The firm is still trying to figure out its growth strategy and place in the legal market, which is not the best setting for an incoming lawyer. There also appear to be financial pressures that the management has not been transparent about.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more clear about what is happening and the long term path for the firm.

I worked at Crowell & Moring full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Crowell is a very progressive law firm with a deep appreciation of collegiality and collaboration. All clients are firm clients and no origination credit (in most circumstances) means partners actually work together well to form cross-disciplinary teams focused on the best needs of the client. Government Contracts, Antitrust, Health Care, Environmental, Consumer Safety, and Tort Litigation practices are all top notch. Attorneys have a great team mentality when it comes to staff contributions and senior staff feel very engaged generally. Firm Chair Kent Gardiner is a truly great human being who cares about people. Associates have a lot of opportunities for growth, learning and finding mentors and champions who will help their career.

    Cons

Very demanding work schedules and post-2005 growth spurt have placed real challenges on the firm's founding ethos of work-life balance and collegiality. Some newer leaders cannot fill the large shoes of their predecessors and it shows.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to involve staff in strategic decision making and expand innovative programs.

    Pros

A very friendly place to work. Great people who are easy to know, great benefits and amenities such as cafe and gym. Inclusive atmosphere and great cross-culture.

    Cons

General frustration with attorney/secretary matches that tended to create a disproportion of work ratio and Human Resources expectation. May have been alleviated with the buyout of 29 secretaries.

I worked at Crowell & Moring full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The attorneys are, for the most part, terrific. There is a great deal of autonomy (you are pretty much left alone to do your work without much micromanaging, as long as you are doing a solid job). Fairly laid-back atmosphere; not uptight at all. Very good benefits and more than fair compensation.

    Cons

If you are part of the paralegal team, be prepared to meet often unrealistic billable hour expectations. There are paralegals who are unable to meet those requirements because others refuse to give up or share the work. Management does little to discourage this and you can expect a thrashing if you don't meet your hours. There is very little appreciation for senior paralegals or those who have been there for a long time (5+ yrs). They would rather hire a bunch of new kids out of college and then lay off several senior staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your "old-timers" more. They're the ones who have been loyal to your firm. Do more to facilitate a more equal workload across staff and stop punishing those who are not responsible for creating work. Focus more on the attorneys, who need to learn how to push their work downward.
