Pros
Most jobs at Cummins can be enjoyable... you just have to find the one that is right for you. I truly enjoy my job. That said, the Cons outweigh the Pros.
Cons
Poor work/life balance - Company claims this is important, but they don't believe it. The Company is always #1... your family can come later.
Pathetic compensation package - Both pay and health insurance are terrible
VERY Political - It's like being in High School all over again; the popular "kids" will do very well, otherwise don't expect to make it very far in the company
Shallow promises - Management will say anything to keep you happy and working hard, but they never come through on their end of the bargin
Advice to Senior Management
Respect all of your employees and not just your favorite employees.
Pros
Lots to learn and lots of knowledgeable people.
Cons
Less then exciting progress prospects.
Advice to Senior Management
I forgot to ask the irritatatingly over-smart gentleman in the exit interview whether the organization has a formal retention policy. This particular gentleman rubbed all employees the wrong way in a single interaction and i doubt it if he continues in the position ,no-one is ever going to change their mind about quitting in the interview atleast.
Employee recognition needs to be driven by management and not thrust on employees. It amounts to blowing your own trumpet which i dont think apart from the ingratialting types woule be too fond of doing.
Pros
Good workplace, good people, good higher management. Job quality is good. Role is good. Appreciation is good. Encouraging higher management
Cons
Workplace out of city, salaries less compared to competitors. Benefits offered are very less. Mostly situated in small cities which are away from major cities
Advice to Senior Management
Increase salaries, benefits and time off. Benefits like a gym, recreation center will be good. Time off of just 2 weeks is very less
Pros
if you like a folksy atmosphere, you might like cummins. if you like structure without change, you might like cummins.
Cons
I did not like the people around me. I found the work assignments to be boring after the initial learning curve.
Pros
1) Good career growth
2) Opportunity to work in wide array of roles
3) Excellent Leadership
4) Healthy Work Environment
5) Nice location for the people who like small towns
6) True Global Company
7) Global Applications with Multi-Lingual support
8) Benefits
9) Very Six Sigma focused
Cons
1) HQ is @ Small Town
2) Salary
3) Not an IT driven company
Advice to Senior Management
Need better Pay package for IT staff.
Pros
Lots of opportunities to work with a large variety of projects. Great people, informal atmosphere. Wages are above average, and work schedule is family friendly.
Cons
No two teams share any more information that absolutely necessary. Because Cummins is made up of so many divisions and has no centralized portfolio priorities; it makes it very difficult to resolve resource issues.
Advice to Senior Management
Centralize your PMO portfolio. Prioritize your initiatives and projects.
Pros
an invigorating place to work and continues to earn the respect of the business world because it has a high-performance culture while emphasizing high-integrity business practices, as well as work/life balance.
Cons
The performance review process is not transparent to the employee. The office space management for the employees is poor when the company is growing so fast.
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
If you are looking to gain international experience and many difficult and interesting assignments, this is definitely the company to work for. If you are bound to one specific area of the country, do not work for Cummins because they will move you around a lot. Overall, it is a great work environment t be in.
Cons
The locations are not appealing as they are mostly in small towns and remote locations. The communication within the company can often be slow, but I find that to be true at most major corporations. Cummins is a moderately paying company, so if you're looking to be highly compensated, this is not the company for you.
Advice to Senior Management
Consider having a longer period of time for interns and college hires to make their decision to accept or reject an offer. We want to be competitive in the industry and leverage opportunities against one another!
Pros
Latest equipment and software to work on. Easy to become a lead engineer with a couple of years of experience. Not much work load, so not much work load pressure.
Cons
Office space is very old and is more like a factory than a company. Much old school type of company , and too much documentation than need. Need to write 3 different documents to record one change
Advice to Senior Management
Improve the facilities. Especially cafeteria and restrooms. They feel like factory and not office space.
If someone does not like the place that they are working in, they would never like the work on the whole.
Pros
The company has good benefits (as long as you don't have bad vision), great opportunities from a business standpoint, and lots of opportunities make an impact. The leadership does understand the market and the opportunities which are available to the company. Throughout the downturn the company provided great market returns and did not report a single loss (compared to performance in previous downturns this is a huge improvement).
Cons
The company has some severe foundational organization issues which are limiting the ability of the business to move forward. The majority issue is that the company does not view itself (or have a vision of itself) as a single organization, but as a series of business units which each have distinct leadership and organizational goals.
Advice to Senior Management
Tim has done a wonderful job of turning the company from being a cyclical business into a sustainable business. The challenge for Tom will be to start organizing the company to achieve the company objectives for the next decade.
